Anne Hathaway does a good cover song, therefor is front runner for Oscar?

Ridiculous. Just saw the film and yes she did a good cover, but her actual acting was "good" at best. She certainly shouldn't win just for singing a song. Several other actresses put on much better acting performances this year than her.

I disagree.

Watching Anne Hathaway do this role simply showcases what a vast difference it makes when you have an "actor" play a musical role instead of "broadway" type. She hits this out of the park.

Anne Hathaway winning for singing a song would be almost as ridiculous as when Sean Penn won for Mystic River because of that 30 second scene of him repeatedly yelling ... "is that myyy daughter in thereeeee?!!!!"

Samantha Barks says hi.

I think she was great in the role.

Maybe she shouldn't win bc her character has such a small part in the film but her singing that song was arguably the most well acted and emotional moment of the film

Her acting in that scene was unbelievable. I certainly think she deserves an Oscar for it

acting is normally an overrated activity for idiots but there are performances and scenes that rise above everyone else.
A three minute one take scene where she not only has to cry from the soul while belting out a solo song flawlessly and still emoting facially? Nah, wrap up the Oscar and send it to her house.

with this type of mentality you're basically saying that every other blues musician on Bourbon Street or Elvis impersonator in Vegas deserves an Oscar because they have perfected a soulful and emotional impersonation/cover of a song.

No where close to the same thing. Not only that, but the category of Best Supporting Actress is very weak - just as it is almost every single year.

agree to disagree and yes I know I'm likely in the minority with my view on it, but I just don't believe in handing out Oscars simply for doing a good cover song.

this is very true.

also the Academy loves this type of stuff though. Anne has a lot of things going for her that the Academy worships -
1. its a foreign film
2. its directed by a previous Oscar winner (of another overrated film that the Academy loved)
3. she's in a usually weak category in Best Supporting Actress
4. the media has latched on to her for months now hyping up her cover song
we saw this last year with "The Artist". now it was certainly a fun movie, but the fact that Jean Dujardin won for Best Lead Actor was comical. Not that it wasn't a great performance, but you could attend any random show on Broadway and find just as good silent performances from wonderful actors and actresses across the world.

I'm baffled by your repeated attempt to downgrade her role by calling it a cover song. Of course it's a fricking cover. In fact actors read lines written by someone else. Cover lines if you will. What the frick are you talking about?

angry a bit? chill out
what else do you want me to call it that would please you? it is a cover song and that is the only thing we are hearing about her performance. nothing else about her very small role in that film stood out. she sang a song very well and made herself cry while singing it.

Who is she covering? The songwriter? The vocal coach who taught her the song? Whichever performer you choose? How is that any different then any actor ever performing a musical?

Susan Boyle sings that song well too.

Susan Boyle is the original singer? If not, then she covers the song also
