Why do they put players last names on the back of their game jersey?

The number tells you who is who.

Not as quickly sometimes.

Do you just want no names on jerseys?

Because it's easier for an equipment manager to put down "Smith" instead of "De'Anthony"

You serious, Clark?

I mean, don't you think it's a tad easier to see the name, rather than memorizing every person playing a sport right now?

Play by play announcers refer to players by name, but it's not like they can see the name from the booth. Thu use the number to cross check the roster.

refs and umps refer to players by their number. As a fan, if you know who the players are, you don't need the name. If you don't, you either have to check against the roster or wait for re announcer to tell you.

I don't know anyone who uses the name on yhe jersey as an identification source.

Easier for who to see the name? The number is the player identifier.

Doesn't see to be an issue when the service academy puts theme words where other teams put names.

The worst is when they put team name or something on the back of the jersey

When you are at the game you look at the name from your seat in the terrace to see who the player is?

bullshite.

Names have been on the back of players well before the NFL was the TV giant it is today. The names aren't solely there as identifier for those watching on tv.

I went to a high school game this season in Ascension Parish and it was the damnedest thing...EVERY single player on one team had a last name of St. Amant...

I keep a gameday program of each game being played on my coffee table, to match player number to player. Doesn't everyone?
