I almost hate to admit it, even to myself, but I was moderately disappointed in the movie.
I thought it was very sluggish getting started. From the older Bilbo sequence at the very beginning through the dwarves in his house sequence it just didn't seem to flow very well at all for me.
Perhaps what bothered me most was that I found McKellan's performance very flat, especially after the brilliant way he played Gadalf throughout LOTR. Perhaps it was age catching up with him but I just didn't think his performance seemed inspired at all. Same with Christopher Lee in his brief appearance. Though in his case I'm pretty sure it WAS affected by his age.
Even the action sequences were hit and miss for me. Some parts were pretty good (the Trolls in particular) but a lot just seemed too cluttered and ill focused. And the constant falling on portions of bridges through the Misty mountain "tunnels" and in general falling long distances without any injuries took me out of my suspension of disbelief more than once.
And one that's been thrown around back and forth on here - Radaghast. Not horrible but I didn't really care for the way they presented him.
There were things I did like. Martin Freeman did well as Bilbo in my opinion.
The encounter with Gollum was very well done also. (Though I did have trouble following his voice - if I hadn't read through that section of the book recently, I don't know if I would have understood much of what he said during the riddle game). Bilbo's decision not to kill Gollum was depicted excellently IMO.
I thought overall the Dwarves were well presented. Especially Balin. And I didn't have a problem with them Hollywood-ing up Thorin and Fili and Kili. I thought Thorin's back story was well done and his evolving attitude towards Bilbo, while it could have been better wasn't bad.
I thought the movie did gain steam as it went along which bodes well for the next two or at least gives me hope.

The first ten minutes or so, up until the dwarves arrived, was the part I didn't care for the most. I liked the intro but I didnt like old Bilbo narrating it, though I guess he had to though. The saving grace for that was when he said word for word the beginning of the book. I thought that was cool. but in that span Gandalfs character was odd. He was very childish, different from any Gandalf from the LOTR(even in TFOtR) and any of what we saw of him the rest of the movie.
That and how incredibly long the goblin chase was. I don't care for the movie being long, I wouldn't have cared if it was longer, but that needed to be cut down.
Outside of those two things, I really enjoyed the rest of the movie. And they weren't enough to make me have a negative view towards the movie at all.

Finally saw it this past weekend. I really liked it a lot, but this:
..bothered the frick out of me several times. I mean, I'm all for suspensions of belief, but some of the inside-the-mountain scenes were laughable in terms of believability. This bridge falls perfectly onto that one, and then onto another one, whatever...but then all of them fall hundreds (thousands even) of feet down to the bottom and not a single person is hurt...not even a little bit. And that's on top of the bridge actually staying together the whole way down and all that.
And I know, it's a movie about magic and dwarves and dragons and all that...I get that. But some of those scenes in the mountain really took me out of the movie.
But aside from that, I really enjoyed it. I liked the intro and that they at least explain some of what's going on so that nonreaders can kinda have a clue...similar to the openings to the Star Wars movies I guess. I'd like to see it one more time in theaters, but I don't think I will. And I do like how they ended it..similar to the LotR films, where they still had a climax, so to speak, but also managed to leave it on a bit of a cliffhanger.
