so they didn't feel he was worthy of a max deal until someone else gave him one?
and he did what he had to do to go get that max deal?
seems like both sides acted in their respective self-interests...

Why wouldn't the hornets want to save money?
It goes to other player salaries not their pockets.

It was a sound business decision by the Hornets. They knew Gordon wouldn't take anything less than the max. They were willing to offer it to him. HOWEVER, instead of just outright giving him a max deal, they wanted to see if they could save money, by seeing what the market was willing to offer.
Obviously the market was willing to dish out the max and the hornets got him anyway for the exact same price they planned on paying.
The Hornets only had money to gain in this situation, not money to lose.
