really? from what I understood, since the gas port taps off further down the barrel on the midlength the rail would be longer and the opposite for the carbine?

any specific brands to stay away from? I'll be putting it on a Spikes lower

PSA has great deals and products. I bought PSA upper and lower from them. I almost bought a Spikes lower because it was a bit cheaper but it was sold out when I was ready. I went with PSA.

Depending on what style of gas block you are using (specifically if you use a low profile one) any length rail can be used. If you have the traditional gas block that has the fixed sight on it, your options are somewhat limited. But there are manufacturers that make rails with an opening that allows the fixed sight to fit through the top, allowing a longer rail if so desired.

ETA: like this for example. Personally I'm partial to low profile gas blocks that fit nicely beneath the rails.
