It is also easier to pass on once you go.
I have read at least one article where ATF/LE arrested a wife for illegal possession because she knew the combination to the safe where husbands NFA items were kept. If it gets to that point though and they are really trying to screw you over you've probably done something worse. Too lazy to try to find the article, but a trust would prevent this from happening.
Papercut Ninja can tell you all about NFA trust.

quote:
The law recognizes two kinds of possession, actual possession and constructive possession.... Even when a person does not actually possess an object, he may be in constructive possession of it. Constructive possession exists when a person knowingly has the power and the intention at a given time of exercising dominion and control over an object or over the area in which the object is located. The law recognizes no distinction between actual and constructive possession, either form of possession is sufficient.

Can you guys give me a recommendation on an affordable barrel and rail? This is my first build and am trying to do it for a fairly low cost. I already have the following
Anderson lower
Anderson upper
BCM charging handle
AIM BCG .223/5.56 (shipped, not received yet)
DPMS lower parts kit
Magpul MOE carbine stock
Magpul MOe pistol grip
Strike industries dust cover
I am thinking I want a 16" barrel with a 12" rail. I want the rail in flat dark earth.
I am probably just gonna throw some magpul flip up sights on it for now and get a dot later.
I've already assembled the parts I have and will probably take it by my local gun shop to tighten the stock and barrel once complete......and to give the rifle a look over to make sure I didn't screw anything up.
So far it has been an easy process. The only part I could really see needing a vice for so far is to tighten the castle nut and barrel.

You have a budget? I'm still partial to BCM for parts. Noveske makes fine barrels, too, probably a little pricier.
For BCM at 16", you'll pay (stripped) $239 for a lightweight, standard or SOCOM, $269 for a fluted or fluted lightweight, and $309 for a forged hammer - just to give you a point of comparison.

I was hoping around $200........the fax on that mark maker posted runs about $229 with the gas block and tube. I may roll with that one.
As I said, this is my first one so I don't really know all the suppliers or best places to order parts.

Thank you sir.......I like the looks of the ballistic advantage.....and the price.
Do you know if I order the barrel with gas block if the tube will also come with it?
How about a rail recommendation?

Couldn't tell you on the gas block/tube question.
For rail, if you're looking for something cheap it's hard to beat the Matrix Foxtrot on price. The machining isn't as clean as some of the other more expensive brands, but they work. Matrix as a company and how they do business sucks though.
Here is the rail, LINK
buy your gas block and gas tube from them and you will have enough to qualify for free shipping. Joseph is good people and ships ridiculously fast.

You have brand of vertical grip/bipod you could recommend while you are at it?

I'd be interested to hear some more detail on that last sentence. I picked up a Matrix rail and I thought it offered a lot of value and performance for the price and recommend it often for people looking for a cheap rail. But... if they are asshats I might have to stop recommending them.

I really want the BCM short vertical grip but it's for keymod. Think I'm probably going to go with an MLOK compatible Handstop.

I really am not at liberty to say with how litigious our society is.
Like I said the rail is GTG, not as clean on the machine work as some but it works and the price is more than fair.

I think I have decided on the faxon 11.5" big gunner for mine. It's a midlength...something different to try. Just need to find one in stock and then see if the 11" solo ultra lite rail will for with a can. It says it's 10.92" long.

Ok, you talked me into doing more research on trusts which in turn has talked me into setting one up. Good thing I asked because I was in the process of scheduling engraving with Tsumara Designs

I think you will be glad you did. Much easier long term with one.
I have my wife as trustee and kids and brother as beneficiaries.

Had a head slapper I'm a fricking idiot moment last night putting a new trigger one one of my ARs. Went to separate the upper and lower. Pull the rear takedown pin. Tried to pull the front pin to pull them upper and lower apart and the front pin is stuck hard. No amount of wiggling or twisting would get the front pin out. Upper won't hinge. WTF. I jack on the forward assist some. Nothing. I pull the charging handle back and I get no feedback, it's like I don't have a bolt. WTF, I don't remember taking the bolt out of this rifle. Look through the magazine well and sure enough there is no bolt. I pop the dust cover open with my finger through the magazine well. Looks through the ejection port... hey there is my bolt locked back on the bolt catch... *slaps head*. Sometimes I'm a fricking idiot
