I really prefer the .308 to the .223 myself so I'm tempted to do it.

The M1A is based off the old M14, and it's a very robust and heavy rifle.

There are a lot more accessories for the AR-10 platform it seems. The M1A is chambered for a .308 but probably prefers Nato 7.62 rounds unless the .308 factories are less than 175 gr. due to the load being a little hot. Not sure if the AR-10 suffers the same issues but I would suspect it does.

Please avoid using the word assault in this thread. Besides it bothering me, it may rustle some other feathers.

Oh, Carson thanks for reminding me...
Just trying to convince you to buy an M1A, one response at a time.

But in response to M1A vs AR10, the AR10 is actually the original "AR" made by Armalite before the design was converted to .223 and dubbed the Armalite model 15.
The M1A is the civilian version of the select-fire version of the old M14 from the Vietnam era. And the M14 is just a user-improved M1 Garand, replacing 8 round en bloc clips with 20 round detachable magazines, using the slightly smaller .308 Winchester vs 30-06 Springfield, utilizing a straighter operation rod for more reliability, and maybe a few other small details.
Personally, I'm a bigger fan of the M1A because the "ping" you hear after every shot reminds you just how robust the weapon is. On the other hand, I've never shot an AR10 and I'm sure that will start a new obsession as well.
