When did the LSU AD become a private business. They are part of the University.
FAIL.

Terrible news. I won't get caught up into this thread again but I'll reiterate how absolutely ridiculous it is that we expect to stay this competitive when all our money goes to the university because they can't deal with its own budgetary mishaps.
I'm not sure why you framed it this way - the athletic department is a smaller part of the university as a whole... and the university as a whole is getting destroyed by budget cut after budget cut.
LSU is not going to be a legitimate university if this continues

but right now the university needs whatever funding it can get.
When will it not?
I'm on the fence with this. Its great that we have a profitable AD, but we all know that half of this "donation" is going to get pissed away, just like $.50 of every $1 of all money that goes into all public universities.

I like the AD donating to the University b/c of the leverage it gives the AD -- Why do you think Hickey is back already? Don't want to kill the golden goose.

Here's a hint:

The university is a business, and the athletic department is one of its largest revenue generating departments. That some of the revenue the athletic department generates is retained by the athletic department for its own improvement is not wrong or amoral. It's just how the university's business model is set up.
NOW, WHY ARE WE YELLING??? LOUD NOISES!!!

Question that no one seems to know the answer to...
LSU's "Forever LSU" campaign just a few years ago raised $792 million that was supposed to go to the endowment. Having a $1billion endowment was supposed to guarantee we would be in a much better position financially and would not be at the mercy of the legislature.
What the hell happened to that money? Did I misunderstand the nature of the campaign?

why not donate 100% of the profits? Aren't profits the money left over after realizing operating costs? Why do they need to keep, "profits"

yes, the University is a business. The AD is part of the University.

so do you believe each department, like biological sciences and OEVS should also keep their profits from grants? Afterall, they raise WAY more money from grants than does the AD.

lulzy. Money is best made to make more money if you have more of it. Think velocity of money as it relates to equations of scale. Why would you willingly divide such finances when pat of your organization is underwater?

Maybe you missed where the ENTIRE University is underwater.
You know the organization that houses and makes the AD exist?

the football team should set up a kiss booth if they're a girl to help the university

you seem to have some insane belief the football team and the University are partners.
Why would an educated man hold such an insane belief?

What do you want the AD to do with the surplus? Can the quidditch team finally get some brooms that actually fly?

While I understand what you are saying, TA is making a valid point that the University should pursue better methods of overcoming the budget shortfall instead of effectively raiding the Athletic Department.
Which they are. Did you see the thread on the OT? LSU academics aren't allegorical to the 47% TA's trying to paint them as.

yes, the University is a business. The AD is part of the University.
quote:Those departments use their grant money to fund their research, just like the athletic department uses its revenue to fund its espenses. The difference is the athletic department has money left over after its expenses, whereas the other departments don't. IF profits are made from that research by the biology or whatever department, yes, I think they should get to keep some of it, if they are saving it and re-investing it into their own future improvements, as the athletic department is.
so do you believe each department, like biological sciences and OEVS should also keep their profits from grants? Afterall, they raise WAY more money from grants than does the AD.
quote:Because the academic administrators clearly don't know how to raise and manage their money, while the athletic administrators do. That's part of why the academic side is underwater and the athletic side is booming. If the AD donated all their money to the university there wouldn't be anything left over for capital improvements, rainy day fund, etc. The university sure as hell isn't gonna give it back to them, because it won't be there anymore. It will already be spent.

quote:You know there's no link, smartass. But clearly that is how it works in practical terms. Even you can acknowledge that. That's why we are arguing. You don't think it should work the way it does in real life.
Link to that business model?

The administrators hands are so tied down, it isn't even funny. They can't raise tuition behind a trivial amount, they can't let go of their faculty other than instructors making a fairly trivial amount, and their universities are basically the first line of cuts anytime the state has financial difficulties.

Before I saw this, I also made and edit above to acknowledge that mismanagement is clearly not the only reason for the university's financial struggles.
