It is my understanding that you get state money based on your enrollment and institution type. Research institutions get more from the state I believe and the more students you have the more money you get. I don't think you can pick and choose who gets more money. This is just what I have heard in the past.
The only way to change this whole thing is to let these institutions charge what they want for tuition. Presidents have very little control when it comes to major decisions. If they were allowed to act more like businesses the state would have less of a burden.
It would shift to the students.

The University is being slowly strangled, and people who are supposed to be LSU fans have the gall stand on the sideline applauding. It makes me sick. I am happy that the Athletic Department is profitable, and LSU like most any organization could always be run more efficiently. But I cant understand how someone who loves LSU can enjoy watching the University be damaged.
They are searching for a University President, perhaps you should apply for the job. I am sure they will be overwhelmed by your brilliance.

Maybe it's just me, but I actually applaud the way LSU Athletics handled this. It's about time.
Now...everybody carry on with the bickering about how wasteful the university is. I agree with the criticism, by the way.

I've loved LSU for the athletics for years, but the education I got there was garbage. I had self-taught myself much more about my field as a hobbyist from age 12-18 that I just dropped out. I wasn't going to waste more years of my life and thousands of dollars just for a piece of paper.
That's not to say that that I want to watch the University be damaged. I just never saw it as anything special to begin with. It's hard to get upset about it.

Actually, that's not fair to drunk sailors. Unless something has changed since I left the NAV, when drunk sailors run out of money, they crawl back to the ship and sleep it off. If we could have kept drinking and left the tab for taxpayers, I'd probably have never left one of those islands!

I am guessing if you learned your trade as a "hobbyist" in middle and high schools, a college degree wasn't important for your field, anyway. It's like a contractor saying, "Med school was a waste of my time." Not putting down your profession (whatever it is) at all, but just because you didn't need that piece of paper doesn't mean others who want to go into different fields don't.
Those of us who did stick it out and get our degrees and are proud of them do see it as something special and do get upset about it.
