We're probably the last generation to have football as we know it

LINK The evidence is mounting. Call it pussification if you want to, but the writing is on the wall.

I hate that it's happening but I also think it's right. That being said I'd rather live the live of someone who dies at 50 and a multi-millionaire, than the likely 70+ years I'll live and never break 150,000/year.

I agree with this

And why is that?

NOt sure I would. I am 52 now and quite content not living the life of a millionaire. I would like to live into my 70's and enjoy retirement, grandkids and giving back to society.

Dementia is a bitch. I don't know if you know someone who has/had it but its an absolutely terrible way to live. Imagine sitting around all day and not really being sure if what you are experiencing is reality. It's terrifying to me.
To each his own, but I'm taking the extra 20 years of comfortable middle class life all day long over being loaded, relatively young with a partially impaired brain.
This, IMO is what's going to kill the game. Not the rule changes that are certainly coming, but when parents stop signing their kids up to play.

Hold the phone.
Most if not all of that research is the game of yesterday.
There are so many different rules and safety precautions of today that.. that is unfair and not accurate for today's players IMO.

I don't think there is a way to know for sure yet, but given the fact that we still have conclusions pretty regularly, I wouldn't count on the cases of brain trauma going down with current players.

I think it will go down, especially with the newer helmets.
But really the game is already starting to become unrecognizable as it is.

And yes guys still get concussions today, but the precautions are incredibly different from back then. You simply do not go back in. And you sit a while and have to clear several doctors/test. I can't see it being worse.
QBs are better protected now and now all the defenseless player rules.. I just think it will only get better results in the long term.

I hope you're right, maybe a combo of new equipment and rules will keep most of the game intact.
Just don't know though. I'm going to watch every game like its the last one

Like Ditka says, get rid of the facemasks.
That'll change the game back to running, blocking, and tackling. Not highlight reel hits that put guys down.

Dont think getting rid of facemasks would fix anything. Sure, there would be fewer guys head hunting...but collisions would still occur, and the damage would be much worse. Lots of knocked out teeth. Has anybody done any studies on the long term effects of rugby....or Aussie Rules football? Id be interested to see how they compare with the NfL....

When you are talking about brain damage it's kinda of hard to call it pussification.

That rule is like 2 years old. Can't really say "back then" when players still playing didnt have the benefit of those protections.
Also concussions are only part of the problem. From the link.

Linemen made up 40 percent of those cases, supporting research that suggests repetitive head trauma occurring on every play — not concussions associated with violent collisions — may be the biggest risk

I can understand making the game safer but Goodell has taken it way too far. I mean college football takes precautions by penalizing certain hits but they don't make it damn near impossible to play defense like the NFL does.

Well that's just sad.

however, when you are 49 you will regret it and it will be too late; the devil would already own your soul (figuratively of course). wouldn't it be hell to like strike it rich at age 45 or something and still have to die at 50? live your life man; you might make way over 150k if it's that important ot you and you apply yourself.
