4th and goal at the 3 yard line, down 14 in the second quarter. What do you do?

How is this relevant to this game?

You take the FG in that situation.

However the Texans were down 21, 4 and 4 from the 34 yd line.

pretty sad that the biggest regret is not converting a 4th down from the 34....our team is sucking hard!

It's not. It's a hypothetical scenario

I'd say the biggest regret was Schaub not throwing to Foster on the interception

Meh, it happens with an aggressive offense. McCourty is an All-Pro caliper corner playing safety, its not like it was some scrub out there.

Oh I know, I'm not real mad at the throw, it was good defense.

Could be a totally different game though.

Personally, I'm not sure. I'd probably take the 3 points.

But statistically speaking, it might be the better option to go for it.

There is a whole bunch of information and books out there about this very subject. The overall agreement among people who have studied this is that coaches are WAY too conservative on 4th down.

There is also a psychological aspect to it. Humans perceive risk as being a much greater loss than it actually is. And they see the reward as being much less than it actually is. There is a name for it in psychology, but I can't remember what it is.

There is also the part about coaches not wanting to take any blame. If he sends the kicker out there on 4th down and he misses, then it is the kickers fault. The coach "did the right thing". Can't blame him.

But if the coach sends the offense back on during 4th down, everybody is going to blame the coach if the team doesn't convert, even though all of the statistical evidence in the world says he did the right thing.
