Aren't there usually 4 Heisman finalists?

Was there nobody deserving of that 4th spot?
ETA: Braxton Miller should have gotten an invitation IMO

I also thought 3 seemed low...it seems like there are usually 4 or even 5.

They usually cut it off where there is a wide split in the number of votes. Most of the time it's between 3 and 5.

They only invite people that are close to winning, if one person is extremely behind the other top candidates they won't invite them to NY

they send as many finalists as it takes to keep it respectable. they don't want to embarrass somebody at the end
usually there are 4-5...i can't remember 3

Which was total BS...he should have been top 2 for sure....maybe even won it.

2008 was the last time there were only 3.

Not going to lie Teo is great but I would think for a defensive player to get it at this point you need something like punt returns on the resume as well.

Pretty sure there were only 3 invites when Troy Smith won it - Smith, McFadden, Quinn.

He is an average top of the line LB. He has no business even being discussed for this award.

They can invite up to five finalists. But this year it was pretty clear that there were only three with a legit shot (JFF, Te'o, and Klein) so that's all they invited.
(And you could argue that Klein was questionable after the Baylor game)

After HB7 didn't get it last year I don't see how any defensive player will ever get it.

No way Te'o deserves it more then HB7 did last year. He's a great college LB, but that's it. He doesn't produce anything for the team other then a few tackles. He has 103 recorded tackles this year which is less then his previous two years. His 7 Interceptions aren't even best in the nation either. How he got invited is a joke...

All three QBs too. Very rare to have a group of finalists all play the same position.

Te'o is in a much weaker group than Mathieu. Mathieu had RG3 and Richardson. This Heisman class is just not as flashy or stacked.

Because he wasn't even the best player at his position on his team. He definitely had the big play factor which is what got him to NY but he finished about where he should.
I like ND and Te'o but it's absurd he is a legit candidate to win this award.
Manziel is the only legit Heisman caliber player this year.

T''''eo is so awesome he takes up two spaces

Tyrann Mathieu also lead his entire team in tackles from a non high productive tackling position (cb)
Tyrann's team was undefeated in the SEC.
He literally won about 3 games because of his impact in big time games.
He had ff, TDS, etc and he even missed an entire game.. And he still didn't win it. Teo doesn't deserve it any more.
Didn't the bulk of Teo's ints come in 2 games against really horrid teams, and then I know he had 1 against a fresh qb making his first start..

They just need to make the Heisman an offensive award. There really are no defenders who deserve it as much as the Qbs/Rbs. Only way a defender should get mentioned is if they also play an offensive position and actually make an impact.
When is the last time anyone on defense won the NFL Mvp? Taylor in '86 is the only one I remember. Fact is offensive players are just more valuable.
