Is it looking like there will be a new next gen system from Sony or Microsoft that soon?
Yahoo financial and other actual legit news sources besides sites like IGN are reporting that the new Xbox will be out next holiday season.

The small arse town that I am from was sold out of them at Wal-Mart and GameStop. It's selling quite well.
It's sold like 450K units in the US just last month. Pretty damn strong. Saw it IGN the other day.

If you're getting it blind, then a wii isn't bad. But in all seriousness, he wants whatever his friends have. If there's some way to figure that out then that's likely your best bet. Or shite, just work it into conversation with him and see exactly what he wants.
But he won't want to be the odd man out with his friends when they're talking about their games/systems. Good points in this thread about new systems coming out next year, but at 7 he won't need the new ones. So even an Xbox or PS3 is a good buy.

The WiiU will be the only console currently on the market that will still be supported for the next 6 years and the games are aimed at kids his age.

I would say wii u. It's the best option for him to play both by himself or with you or his friends.
I've seen what the system is capable of and there is some incredibly cool stuff that will come out.

I don't really know what a Wii U is, but if I were you I'd try to shield him from the online experience for a few years.

Yeah he won't be online. Just something for him and his friends to enjoy when I have him with me and we are not doing other things
