In my honest opinion, we need help at OLB
it would help in the run game some too. A lot of times offenses run those off tackle plays and our speed at OLB isn't that great. I still want to see what Hawthorne can do. He missed a lot of games because he was hurt. Hopefully he get settled in this last month of the season.

We also really need secondary help.
they are playing better than they were at the beginning of the season but the thing that pisses me off is the missed tackles. I don't expect lock down coverage and a stop every play on defense but the constant missed tackles need to fricking stop!

Maybe Harper's too small, but moving him to OLB permanently might be the easiest solution.

jordan (though still very young and i have a hard time putting him here, but ill do it), jenkins, lofton I'll give you.
Casillas is always hurt, Greer has played like shite this season, Hicks hasn't started a game yet.
He isnt even that bad in coverage, he always makes his tackled, and he is performing in the top of the charts compared to other safetys.
2nd most passes deflected among Safteys this season, tied with ed reed who only has one more pic than him(22nd in the NFL overall)
1st among all dbs in solo tackles this season (8th in the NFL overall)
15th in the league in total tackels, only one other DB has more (It is Malcolm Jenkins)

Problem is too many people excuse a SS's role in run support as a crutch for sucking in coverage.

Fwiw, Jenkins with his missed tackles ate much more alarming.
He ranks 13 in solo and 11th in total tackles this season.
To put it a better way:
Jenkins has more total tackles than any other DB in the league right now (Harper is second).

Jenkins and Harper are solid playmakers but I for would not be opposed to seeing some more of Quiddus and Rafael Bush in passing situations.

I'll give it too you that too many people don't understand SS's roles. They're much more difficult than anyone realizes. They're basically erasers in the run game and the odd man out in the passing game.
In the run game they have to be so smart and active at the same time. They have to be able to recognize zone vs man plays at the snap of the ball. If it's zone they have to recognize inside vs outside. They also have to know the numbers play side and know their role in maintaining gap discipline. If its an outside zone they have to recognize if the EMLOS has been reached or not. If he has he has to get overtop. If not he has to fill inside. If its zone he has to pursue on the inside hip and be ready for the cutback. In man schemes you have to account for the extragap created by any pulling lineman or fullback.
In pass coverage you're likely who teams scheme around due to your varied coverage responsibilities. It's easier to get someone in te middle of the field in a bad matchup than a CB on the outside.
SS is a VERY difficult position. I just don't think Harper is very good at it.

Me neither. With Jenkins, Harper and IAQ on the field at the same time the offense would have no idea who was playing corner, who was blitzing, and who was dropping back into the safety position, it could make for some very cool packages on the D. Especially if we put IAQ in a "safety role" and put Jenkins back into a more cover corner role opposite Greer with white or prob at nickel. I absolutely love to see that.

Lol so overrated. Saban's CBs are a product of elite front 7s.

Absolutely love when Spags drops Harper to a LB and brings in Quddus or Bush

Imagine what our secondary would look like with an elite front 7

Next season, after our D has had an entire season and 2 off seasons with Spags, it will be a scary animal to watch.

He is already doing it now and it seems like to me that we get off the field on 3rd down a lot more often when IAQ is in there. He is a lot faster than 41 & 27.

i want someone who will rush the passer and there should be quite a few of those guys in next years draft

I know imagine a whole offseason after he has evaluated talent, and come up with schemes that best fit our players and he has worked on developing the rookie talent we have.

back to the OP, I like Rambo a lot myself. Unfortunately 1st Rd is too high and I see him gone before the 3rd Rd pick.
What was the comment in the SECCG today? Most everyone on the Georgia defense got an NFL draftable grade. Impressive.
Anyone have a link to tape of the LSU-TxAM game? I'd love to watch it again only watching the LSU DEs vs. the AM OTs. Four potential NFL 1st Rders lining up against each other.

And...? All those missed tackles are still atrocious. He's missing around 18 percent of his tackles.

I was never saying Rambo with the 1st rounder. Like you said, good player, but 1st round is too high. If we could trade into the back-end of the last 2nd, though, I think it'd be a perfect pick.

It's an awesome matchup in theory, but it's tough to gauge DEs when they're rushing against a mobile QB. So many times they're DCs will have them rush and peel off in contain instead of really getting after it (and this is coming from someone who thinks Mingo and Sam are horribly overrated). That wouldn't be a great game to evaluate them on.
