Anybody used a bark collar on their dog? Do they work?

I have a 12 year old retriever that barks all the time just outside my back door. I love him but it is extremely disruptive. No matter how much I scold him, he will not stop. He is getting old (12 yrs) and senile and can't hear very well. He is more stubborn now than ever. All he wants to do is be next to the kids, ages 1 & 3, from morning to night. As long as he is outside and the kids are inside, he is going to bark, and it seems impossible to stop. Is it cruel to use a bark collar on a 12 year old retriever that can't hear or see well? Do they work? And what is a good brand if so? Thank you for your help.

Your saying it does work? Ok, do you remember the brand?

I have no first hand experience with bark collars, but as a general rule tri-tronics makes the best e-collars.

No clue but i have threatened to use one on my lab but the wife wont allow. It sits outside my window and howls all night long with the coyotes

Yes tritronics makes good stuff. I think the effectiveness depends on the dog, I had a beagle that would run the batteries down in her bark collar in a day or so. I had another beagle that you could put an extra plain collar on him and he would stop barking. I think most dogs fall into the second category, and if so the silence can be heaven on earth. Bark collars are definitely worth the money.

Aren't bark collars pretty cheap compared to other e-collars?

Much cheaper, the e collars will run several hundred dollars for a set. I think I paid 50-60 for my bark collars. It's been several years since I bought any.

I've used one on a rat terrier cross we had outside. It worked WELL.
Forget what brand but it would reward the dog for not barking by longer intervals yielding a weaker shock and working it's way back up (level-wise) if they continued to bark.
Think it was only 50 bucks.

They work but keep in mind you are teaching you dog to never bark, this includes barking at strangers and being a watch dog.

Some dogs figure out ways to get around them. My dog only used one for two weeks when he was little. I lived in a high rise apartment with stained concrete floors and he would get jacked every time someone walked by. I started crate training him and used the bark collar at the same time. He figured it out after 1.5 weeks.
I have seen dogs learn that they can whine to get around them, and my dad uses it on his German Shepard. His dog won't bark with it on, but when it is off, he goes to town.
Leave it on them 24/7 for a week or two and it should work
