Settling in for a movie with the wife and I'm pushing this movie. Feeling burned after The Campaign earlier this week because it sucked and I need to cleanse my pallet with some art.
The wife doesn't want to watch a downer movie but I've wanted to see this since it came out.
Thoughts?

I just watched it last night. I think this movie walked the line between showing an unique familial relationship and glorifying poverty. While the characters were "colorful" and interesting - The setting made me feel dirty and hopeful that there aren't a whole lot of people like the ones featured actually in existence.
If you want a fanciful film about squatters with no future but love each other... This is the movie for you.
I like the way it was done technically... but it left me feeling a little angry and dirty (not like perverse... like grubby dirty) knowing there are probably lots of people like this out there and all the love in the world won't improve their fates.

I hope you enjoy the movie more than my wife and I did. I kept slouching deeper and deeper into my chair in the theatre because I picked the movie that night and I could tell that she was having the same reaction to the movie. It just wasn't very good, in my opinion.
We watched Sound of My Voice and Queen of Versailles recently and liked those better. Maybe give those a try next time.

I thought it was brilliant. Best picture nominee for sure. The theatre I saw it in just sat in silence after.

If that is what you think, I think you missed a big part of what it was saying.

No... I liked the metaphorical aspects of it. I understand it was about family, friends, living lives on their terms... a culture, etc...
...but the reality it was grounded in overpowered all of that. The fact that these people were living in deplorable conditions and the kids were going to have zero education, etc... bugged me.
