I bought my son a Remington model 700 youth gun in .243 when he was 9. eBay is full of Remington sa stocks for when he outgrows it. If you are hunting timber you will never get a shot over 100 yards anyway. 243 is an excellent whitetail cartridge at moderate ranges (300 yards). When you are young you think you need all these magnum rifles to kill deer but you really don't.

All this coming from someone who shoots coyotes with a .257 weatherby MAG?
Just giving you a hard time, and yes you are right, does not take a magnum to kill a deer, I have a 7 mag that I have killed more deer with than all other guns I own combined and I love it, but bought a .270 last yeAr that is quickly becoming my favorite.

Lots of them out there.
My personal recommendation is to get him a model 700 with a youth stock. When he outgrows the short stock, a full sized 700 stock will be very easy to find. He'll never need another rifle.

I'm with Downshift.
That's pretty much the perfect solution for a first gun. He'll always have it.

I got my sona 7m o8 when he was 9. He has killed a crap load of deer with. No recoil. He still uses it today, is 16 now. i got him the Ruger M77. It is a small gun but not really a youth model. I always thought he would want another one but he loves this one. My brother bought him just like it. he hunts with climbing stands a lot and like the compact size

This is what I bought my daughter and I use it in ladder and climbing stands. Great little gun.

my dad bought me my first rifle at age 8 (.223) and i lost 2 deer
next was 30-30 around age 10 and was a killing machine
then at age 14 he got me the 7mm-08 which i still shoot today (19 y/o)
dont plan on getting another gun until im out of college. remington model 7 youth edition 7mm-08 is the perfect gun for anyone. hands down

How does the recoil compare between the 30-30 and the 7mm-08?
