And I found this beauty.
Not sure if he can shoot it, but its a pretty cool gun none the less. Anyone have one of these?

.223 deer rifle

I wouldn't go below a 22-250 and even those you have to trust the kid will make a good shot.

Why not go with a 243 or 7mm-08? They have very little recoil and will kill a deer dead.

I imagine it would be fun for him to shoot as long as he has a good rest.

I'm not a deer hunter (I fish) but isn't that too small for deer?

I have an AR 15 and it is a varmint rifle.

Damn skippy!

Lil Josey is going to use mine this weekend. I got it when I was 9 and it has slayed many a deer.

I'm not sold on 223, just looking. Gonna take him to shoot the 17hmr today. See how he tries to hold steady.

.223 will def kill. Im going to do like my brother did. He bought each of his sons an AR when they were young and thats what they started deer hunting with. Adjustable stock makes it a good weapon for them. The oldest just shot his first buck (5 point) with his last week.
Its a good excuse to pick up a couple AR's

My daughter and niece killed several deer with my 22-250 and none ran more than 50yds but you have very little blood to trail. I trusted both to make good shots because both were good shooters.
I used good bullets not varmit style bullets. I doubt you can find anything other than varmit bullets in 223.

243 and 7mm-08 are great calibers though. My wife hunts with a 7mm-08

.223 is not a good deer round.

and for $640, you can do better anyway.

bought my son (who is 8) a Marlin 7mm-08 ($260 on sale) and a Nikon Scope ($250 on ebay)

i'm in the gun for less than $520 and it's a tack driver. And will take down any deer the cross hairs are on.

I'm with them. Go with a caliber that will give him a little bit more margin for error. .223 really sucks as a deer round.

223 is not a good deer caliber and little if any margin for error. You can get a good deer rifle and use managed recoil ammo to virtually eliminate the kick if he is sensitive to that. The 308 and 7mm/08 would be great choices.I had a Model 700 in 270 that I found a youth stock for on Ebay.I got some of the MR ammo and my 8 yr old is a crackshot with it.I kept the original stock so the gun can grow with him.
