A client of mine is a member of one of the clubs and invited me to go on a trip in January. I've heard it's an amazing place.
Has anyone ever hunted Davis Island? What can I expect?

More deer (and big deer) than you can imagine.
My brother was invited there several years ago. He brought a video camera, since the standards for shooting a buck are so high, he figured he wouldn't see anything big enough to shoot.
He ended up killing a 168" buck the first day. A freaking monster. The damn thing about it was the buck was missing a G2, which was forked into 2 12" tines on the other side. Might have been a 180" or bigger had that not been broken off.
It was during the rut, and he got video the next day of 14 bucks in a line trailing a hot doe.
Expect a bunch of rules. They have big fines for shooting deer too small, coming off the stand early, and a bunch of others. I think he said the rule book was 100 pages or something. Nevertheless, enjoy the trip. That's a fine place from all accounts.

You heard correct.

Yes, but I only went up there to hunt the thousands of mallards that call that place home.
I'll put it to you this way, after my first day there a bunch of hardcore deer hunters where wanting to draw for duck blinds.

A great time.

The amount of ducks I saw one evening at dusk was incredible

Sounds like you need a GoPro for Christmas if you don't have one...

Which club on Davis Island as there are several different clubs? Some are better than others. The deer hunting is good on all of them but the high water a few years ago did put a small dent in the deer population and a huge dent in the turkeys.

I just got back from Palmyra. Got three shots in 4 hunts. It's one of my favorite weekends of the whole year.

I believe this. That place holds some mallards for sure. I haven't there in over 10 years, but I have camped and drank there since then. Good times for sure.

not sure which one. know the camp got damage last year but they already fixed it. Going the first weekend of January aroudn teh 5th. Haven't been deer hunting in a few years since i moved to NYC. It sounds like the hunt could be so it sounds like it will be quite the treat.

Primary rut is late Dec/Early Jan; secondary late jan/early Feb. There are some monsters. Complicated rules, so you almost need to bring a rule sheet out on the hunt and study it for each buck you see. I think there are 5 clubs on the Island: Palmyra, Kellogg, Parker, Rosedale and I can't remember the other.

mallards
Alx and I hunted Palmyra a couple of weeks ago. and their cypress lakes were close to bone dry. Not huntable without a ton of rain, which is super odd, considering that the whole island was under 10-15' of water last year. There is one lake on the property with water, and it was chock full of woodies, but I did not see any mallards.

Paradise. That's the one I used to hunt back in high school. Had a buddy in there.

Palmyra
does it still have the same "entry fee" or "buy in" as back in the day?
Posted on 11/15/12 at 3:13 pm to Ole Geauxt
It's been called both as far as I can remember but I'm certainly no DI expert.
All of them are buy in now.
All of them are buy in now.
