-About half an ounce simple syrup, 2 dashes bitters and a thin orange slice in the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass.
-Muddle the orange a bit.
-2 oz rye whiskey (bourbon will work)
-add ice and a Maraschino cherry and stir
-enjoy
Excellent gameday eyeopener IMO. Much prefer this over Bloody Mary, Screwdriver, etc.

Yeah I usually add an extra shot of whiskey in mine to cut down the sweetness a bit.

Good drink. One of my favorites. My recipe doesn't involve simple syrup.
soak one sugar cube in bottom of the glass with bitters and a splash of soda, then muddle and pour in rye whiskey and ice then add an orange slice and cherries.

I just muddle 2 sugar cubes with the orange slice

That is just a coarse simple syrup. Perfectly acceptable.

I use R2R's method because that's how my grandfather taught me. I've had it other ways and none taste nearly as good to me, but I know it's purely mental. Nostalgia is a powerful force.

I know. I was just pointing out its easier than making a simple syrup. Which is pretty simple in its own right

Sugar cube, dash of water to dissolve cube, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, shave a wedge of orange peel into glass, add ice, add fair amount of bourbon or rye.

Due to a recent influx in satsumas to the FT household we will be doing Satusuma Old Fashioned's. I'll let y'all know how they turn out.

These are fantastic, cut back on the simple syrup by about 10%.

Great drink, one of my go-to orders while waiting for a table or right when I sit down at a restaurant.

I've subbed these for oranges in old fashioneds for the exact same reason. Good change-up.

Satsuma Old Fashioned
Special filter applied to the picture called f'd up iPhone lens.
Got about 200 satsumas that I have to work with, will run out of whiskey long before fruit.
