Are Pro Athletes Overpaid?
Posted on 10/31/12 at 2:09 pm

Had a discussion with a friend of mine recently after watching MNF and he believes that Athletes are paid WAY too much for what they do. I countered his argument by saying that we live in a capitalistic society where money is made by supply and demand. Pro athletes are there to entertain us and to play pro sports is extremely hard to do (requires amazing skill).
Are the contracts of Pro Athletes justified?
I firmly believe so....

They are justified becasue we continue to pay to support those salaries.

Ethically Yes I think they are overpaid for playing a game, but I understand business part about it. So the capitalist side in me says No they are not.

Athletes are paid what the market will bear.
Some people just don't like that.
The fact is that humans have always placed an extremely high value on entertainers.

yes they are, they should re-distribute there wealth to the rest of us, it's not fair.

we are all worth what someone is willing to pay us
that being said, sports owners appears to be some of the biggest fools when dishing out contracts

Yes. Most of them couldn't make much of a living doing anything else. If all the owners refused to pay more than 250k in salary then the players would be forced to take it or else face a life spent working manual labor most likely.
But collusion is a tricky business

Their job does require great skill, but I really don't feel like someone could be worth $10 million a year. But it is the fault of the owners for paying that much.

If you talk performance, and what they do to help a team win, no fricking way. However, I'm sure the bean counters have figured out how much revenue certain prima donnas can bring in in other areas, because they keep throwing money at them. (Matt Flynn?

Yes, they are way way way way overpaid, but we have to blame ourselves for what they are paid. We are the ones that make them so valuable. If we stopped paying to watch them play games, they wouldn't get paid anything.
A stupid clear rock called diamond shouldn't hold that value either, but we assign the value and have only ourselves to blame for it.

This is very true. Gladiators were a great bargain but Lions incurred great costs in upkeep.

I always hear the argument "Why don't we pay our teachers that much, they're the ones who actually improve our society?!"
-My response:
We would have to pay out the arse to send our kids to school if teachers were making $2+ million a year.

Yes, athletes and all major entertainers are very much over paid.
It is a business and supply and demand rules, so that is just the way it is. I don't want to step in and force change, but I wish people would stop bitching about how bad our country is economically right now when concerts and sporting events still draw $$$$ like they do.

They do.
So long as you are a Mercedes/Cadillac dealer, a rim and stereo shop, custom jeweler, stripper, strip club owner, Alize distributor, paternity lawyer, night club owner or a cheesecake factory in Nashville, TN.

They're worth whatever someone is willing to pay them.
