quote:Yes. The charm bar has search and it can be pulled up on the start screen or desktop by hovering the mouse in the top right corner or hitting windows + C.
but the search feature can be accessed from the desktop
I'm settling in a bit. I've read a few guides and learned a few useful things.
The main thing pissing me off now is the problem shutting down and I've had no response on the windows forums.

You have to love the interwebs.
I found a post for windows 7 experiencing the same sleep/ shutdown reboot problem.
My mother board has a driver applechrger.sys which is bad. The post listed a program to uncheck that driver so it won't load. Which I did. It worked.
Now I can turn my system off AND..... that driver was also causing the slow boot. 2 birds with one stone.

Ok. My Final results are in.
I actually like Windows 8 now that I have it working properly and have used it for a few weeks.
Boot time and sleep time and MUCH faster which is nice. As I have stated before, Windows 8 does a much better job of turning programs off when you close them. My CPU used to run up to 30% even with everything closed after using it for the day. Now, Once I close everything, the CPU drops to 0%.
This is good for saving energy and less wear and tear on your CPU.
There still need to be some tweaks to dual monitor use. I can open netflix and then move over to the windows start screen on the other monitor but if I then click back on netflix, the start screen drops to the desktop. I don't see why the start screen can't be locked on one monitor while doing whatever you want on the other monitor.
The whole point of Live Tiles, is to see what is going on and if each time I click on the desktop, the start screen closes, then I almost never get to see the start screen.
Overall, for me, the move to Windows 8 was the right choice. It was cheap and my system runs better.
The learning curve really wasn't that bad although it does seem step when you first dive in.

I'm loving it now that I'm used to it after about a week of running only 8.

I ordered a Red Lumia 920 Wednesday and it still hasn't shipped. I was hoping to play with it over the weekend.

Mine shipped yesterday, but won't be getting it till Monday most likely.

Seems like Nokia wasn't ready for the demand. From everything I have read today, there were only a few phones per store. I am pissed that AT&T doesn't give ANY status updates or expected shipping times.
I hate AT&T but I couldn't wait any longer for a damn windows phone. I've been waiting since February when the 900 came out. I had a feeling it wouldn't work with windows 8 so I wisely held off, but I can't wait until the exclusivity contract expires. So I decided to deal with Satan and AT&T is giving me a pitchfork in the arse at the moment.
SEND ME MY PHONE!

I added Windows Start Menu in windows 8 and absolutely run it. Runs exactly like windows 7 now, only far more smoother with less CPU usage on all my apps. I have no issue running netflix.
I love it now. I think I got it for free from LINK /

My netflix fix was easy. I just had to uninstall silverlight then reinstall it.
I have noticed a few other oddities. In task manager, my hard disk drive is running at about 100% even though I am not doing much of anything.
I turned off windows indexer and it stopped.

Get Start 8 from stardock.com and it will make it better
Posted on 11/11/12 at 5:25 pm to TheChiznit
the stardock win8 start menu is by far the best start menu addon i have used... it doesn't care about adding it's own personal company touch to it and it looks exactly like the oem start menu. Check it out

I cancelled my Lumia 920 order because I was miffed at AT&T. Since then, I have been reading up on the 820 or the HTC 8X. They came out today and the pricing for those is almost the same as the 920.
In fact with AT&T, I pay $99.00 for the 920 and get a free charging pad.
So here we go again, I ordered from AT&T. I just can't wait any longer.

Yep, got it yesterday. Red Lumia 920.
Love it, coming from 5 years of iOS it's a big change but the thing is beautiful and I'm getting used to the OS.
Really liking it, syncs perfectly between my phone and PC with the Windows Phone 8 App for Windows 8, everything is seamless.
Came with my free charging plate too.

Update - After using Windows 8 for a month, I like it. I am used to it. I like it a lot.
I made the mistake of buying a new computer with Windows 8 on it for my step dad. He was nervous about getting Windows 7 {his old system is ancient}so he freaked when he realized he was getting 8.
So... I downloaded start8 for my system to test it out.
WOW! It works great. If you want the increased stability and security of Windows 8 with the user interface of Windows 7 , then drop 5 bucks on stardock start8.
On another front. I love my red lumia 920 to death.

Well, if you don't like the start screen, you can go to LINK /
When you run that program it will change your settings to skip the start screen and load the desktop. It will also create a start button like Windows 7.
I don't have a problem with the start screen or the missing start button but for anyone who does have a problem then Start8 is a fantastic product.
