Why is everything that's a controversy called "insertnamehere Gate"?

Now we have "Stick 'Em Gate" according to FOX...Chargers being investigated for using Stick 'Em against the Broncos. Didn't realize Rivers threw so hard that his receivers can't catch it.

its become synonymous with a scandal, would you rather people just say "Bounty Scandal" you have to put something in there that indicates it is an issue.
