at this point, hotel availability in baton rouge is very scarce. the only rooms available are outside of the area, so we would have to deal with traffic anyways.

we are just going to bite the bullet and head south. our clocks will still be on pacific time so it hopefully wont be too rough.

we travel back to san diego on monday and plan to spend sunday in new orleans.

recommendations from friends have pointed us towards:

ralph and kacoo's
mother's
acme oyster house
broussard's
cafe de monde

what time do you think we should expect to arrive in new orleans if we were to leave immediately after the game?

If we win many wont go home... a person I know that works for the EMS crews said when we beat Bama two years ago they had to keep answering calls at TS until four in the morning! They would usually vacate the site by midnight.

Ralph's is a good seafood place but you'll be eating seafood all day Sat more than likely. Mother's often has a line & with all the great places to eat there, I never stand in line. Acme is very good; Broussard's is a dress up place, good food but you can easily get more bang for your bucks at many other places. I like Coop's, a very low key, locals place with a great cajun/N.O style menue. But there are literally a 1000 good places to eat, suggest you google N.O./French Quarter Restaurants, pick out a few that sound good & come back here for comments as you have time. Unless you're into gambling, the Casino is just that, a gambling hall; Pat O'Briens is a must for at least one hurricane ( get a geaux cup & avoid the $3 charge for the glass). When staring at a shaking booty on Bourbon ( luring you into the club), check for an Adams apple, as some are tv's. Unless you're into such. Don't go beyond 10-12 blocks deep on Bourbon as the alternative lifestyle starts around there. You'll know when to stop & turn around. Harmless but pretty open bout it all. Sunday brunch at the Hilton used to be great, it's a champagne brunch with all you can eat, jazz music, & a nice view of the River. Ride the street car all the way down St.Charles Ave & back if your wife wants to see some of the Uptown Mansions of Old N.O. Gameday in B.R. is a whole nother world than anything you've experienced, but with the bama game being what it should be, the tailgating will be even bigger than ever. Ignore the idiots in red shouting Roll Tide. Warning: when told it's fried alligator, it really is; same with rabbit sauce pecant. fried oysters are common, too. All delicious & spicey.

Just let everyone you meet know you are fron San Diego and this is your first SEC game. All will go all out of their way to convert you to LSU football

This right here is some solid advice. We take so much pride in our hospitality, that if you'll walk around with that kind of "dumbfounded" look on your face - you know, the "where do i go next" look - people will figure out that you're a foreigner, and will immediately do their level headed best to impress you with what they've got to offer in the way of food, drink, and bullshite. As good as the food is, sometimes, the bullshite's even the best part.

While I'm not trying to dork y'all out, but maybe you and wife should wear some Charger's gear, or something like that, such that you'll stick out. Seriously, folks will notice, and ensure that you'll have a good time. It's really that easy - find the biggest/best talegate that you see, politely walk up to the ringleader, and let them know that you came all the way from San Diego just to see the spectacle that is Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium. We'll handle it from there.

The game that you are about to attend (assuming LSU doesn't lose again/Bama doesn't lose), and the atmosphere that you'll see, will be as ------ I just can't come up with the right word to describe it. You'll know what I mean when you get there.

The Chimes has already been mentioned multiple times in this thread. There's a reason for that. Believe it or not, there is actually some bad cajun food in restaurants in South Louisiana. It's not at the Chimes though. You'll definitely want to get a cup of gumbo to go along with whatever else you get.

Since you're staying downtown NO Friday night, you obviously won't be able to "get it all in" - just take a look at the thread, whenever it ends, and maybe base your pick on what gets metioned most. It's pretty easy to find great food in New Orleans.

The only bad part about your whole deal is this.....you're cutting your teeth on what will likely be one of the top 5 games played in Baton Rouge in the last, oh, hundred years. Think of it like this......

I think you said your 40?, so that would have made you what, 16 in 1988? You've not yet had the opportunity to experience sex, but are raring to go. I mean, you'd have hit anything at that point in your life. You find your dad's Playboy stash, get ready to rub one out, and just as you unfold the centerfold, lightning strikes the house, simultaneously with a small meteorite, sparks commence, magic is created, and BAM!! - Miss November, 1988, in all her glorious bosomdry, springs to life from the glossy pages, and the first words out of her mouth are "thank you for liberating from being couped up in that akward, folded up position. your sexual wish is my command for the next 4 hours".

How would other sex be after that.

I know you've probably seen a football game before, but you're still a young man. Nothing will compare after this. Most of us had to cut our teeth on Vanderbuilt, or the Citadel, because mom wanted to go to the good games, so dad only took you to those less attended. You're essentially running a marathon without training. Be careful.

This is the wife. I am absolutely blown away by all the posts. We love the advice...I think I will wear either a Charger's jersey or a SDSU hat. All of you have made this trip all the more exciting. 11 days.

Be sure to come back and give us the details after your trip.

Also, if you want more detailed suggestions on restaurants, start a post on the food and drink board.

Have a safe trip and enjoy!

Camellia Grill is in the French Quarter as well. They opened up on Chartres Street a couple of years go.

Not the original but...food is the same.

If you need a place to stay outside of BR I would recommend staying in Denham Springs. Its about 15-30 minutes east of BR depending on traffic. The hotels are right off the interstate by Bass Pro Shop and Hooters and that part of town. I'm sure they have hotels available. As far as food, I personally recommend Chimes or Walk-on's right by LSU campus. Most importantly, get out there early saturday and have a great time. If you tell any tailgate group your story, they will drown you in food and free beer. Hope y'all love LSU as much as we do.

Re the Quarter, do get a geaux ( go to the rest of the world) cup from Pat O'Briens & that way you can walk round vs just sitting in a bar for periods of time. Not enuff time to see all there is to see & you can sit in a bar anytime. But FYI,geaux cups are allowed in any bar in the Quarter. POB's is world famous for its rum based Hurricanes. Suggest you stay farrr away from the Handgrenades at other bars as they are deadly. Central Grocery invented muffalottas if you want to try the locals' favorite sandwich, along with any poboy. A muff will cost you $8 & that with a bag of pistachoes & a Barq Blue Label rootbeer will be all you can eat for under $15.Napoleon House has great ambiance & good food. The Old Absentie House on Bourbon is one of the oldest bars in the Quarter. But the main event is in BR on Sat. Just wear comfy clothes/shoes for the wife, get here early, 9:00'ish is not too early, & just walk all the way around the stadium, making your circle wider each time around, and you are guaranteed to see sites you'll see nowhere else & eat the best food you 'll ever taste. Repeat: pack your own TP.

1. Eat early breakfast in NO. I recommend Luke or Palace Cafe

Wrong.

If you're going to eat breakfast in New Orleans, go to Camellia Grill. It's quite the orgasm in your mouth, sir.

Double wrong, if you want an experience go to Brennan's in the Quarter(French Quarter) for a mid morning brunch. It's touristy"(as some would say)a little bit but everything is fresh and very local. Classy place but Your gameday attire I'm sure will be suitable.

Cocktails: Might I recommend you start of with brandy milk punches or a good cocktails.

Appetizers: Oysters Rockefeller...it's made in the very traditional sense, you can only get it made this way in certain places around NO.

Starter: Turtle Soup/ I'm sure they will be specializing in some bisque. Not the absolute best in NO but you won't know the difference an yes you want Cherry added.

Main Course: Trout Nacy or Eggs Portugese. These are personal favorites of mine that are totally unique to the restaurant. If you don't like seafood the Trout Nacy will change your mind. The Eggs Portugese is...it just "is"

Desert: Now desert comes with, it's a coursed brunch so if your tank is fuel suck it up your going to want it because the whole time while dinning you will be wondering "whats up with the flaming sauce pans". It's plain and simple they give you an option between strawberries with creme or BANNAN'S FOSTER! Oder bannana's foster you'll be happy you did.

Notes: -keep drinking through brunch
-pack up all of you things and have them ready to go before you go to Brennan's

After the possible most pleasant brunch of your entire life haul arse to BR. By the time you show up at LSU it will be around 2-3 which is perfect. Buy booze. Buy a parking spot, your from out of town just do it. Walk around be friendly tell people your from out of town, oh you can drink where ever you want in Louisiana. 90 min before the game go to the north endzone check out our tiger his awesome "cage" and watch the band come down the hill. Don't worry about embarrassing your self down here or being proper in "BR everyone know you gotta let it go".

BTW: I am assuming you have some money your looking about a $400-$500 day but it will be well worth it I promise you. When you go back to New Orleans on Sunday if you can have lunch before your flight go to Mandina's in uptown and get some crab claws and poboy's, onion rings in this state are "pretty freaking" good too. I'm talking "Pulp Fiction" 12 dollar milk shake good.

Not sure getting here for 2 or 3 pm will be "perfect" for this game. Brennan's is a great restaurant & well worth every dollar, but you are coming to BR to experience a LSU football game. Why waste 3-4 hrs in a restaurant that will be there on Sunday or the next time you are in town? And FWIW: the Palace Cafe is owned by the Brennan family & the food is just as good, just not as famous. It's on Canal & has a great jazz champaign brunch on Sunday's, too.

If you want to get a feel for the type of people you'll be meeting at the game, just check out the O-T Lounge & then mix in a day's worth of booze on top.

as yall know, we had no idea what to expect when visiting baton rouge for the alabama game. everyone on this board was very helpful in providing insight and i thought i would let yall know how our trip went.

almost immediately upon arriving in new orleans i learned how to use "yall". i also learned that following up a hurricane with a handgernade can cause unexpected results.

the gameday experience was something i will never forget and was one of the greatest spectacles i have ever seen. not all things live up to the hype, but gameday in lsu is one of those things that outperforms the expectations.

we arrived on campus around 10:00am, parked on la30, and walked towards the northern end of the stadium in hopes of seeing mike the tiger. mike was not out when we went by, but what we did see was people in every direction in some of the most elaborate tailgating setups we have ever seen. literally, you could look in any direction and see people enjoying themselves.

we stopped at the campus store to buy our lsu gear so that we were not confused as tiger bait.

based on the many recommendations, we made our way to the chimes and had a couple plates of jambalaya and red beans and rice. very cool place and the food was fantastic. we didnt wait for a table, instead headed to the back room for open seating.

we then headed back towards the stadium by going through the parade grounds. not sure how to describe what we saw, but i do remember seeing beer flowing through r2d2 and a stripper pole.

we purchased chairs and positioned ourselves to watch the players and band come down the hill into the stadium. while sitting there we talked with others doing the same. it was here that i think i learned the most about how important lsu football is to yall. there were 3 generations of families that just showed up to watch the parade of players, coaches, band, and cheerleaders. amazing that they would fight through this amount of people just to see them and not actually go to the game.

we told our story to many people and they were all shocked we wanted to be there, but were more than friendly in telling us their stories and how much they loved lsu football.

we got to our seats and sat among the nicest people you could imagine. again, we told our story and they did everything to make us comfortable and understand why lsu football is what it is.

we all know how the game turned out. i can only imagine what it would have been like if they would have been able to hold on.

all in all, this was one of the best experiences we could have asked for. to see that many people enjoying themselves in so many ways, and to see no incidents, was truly amazing. what i will remember the most is the sense of tradition and pride people have for lsu football.

thank you all so very much. we will be back.
