re: Should an OF umpire call an infield fly?

We are on the exact same page Lester (even if you don't see it ). Umpires use where the ball is hit to make the ruling, but to say the ruling shouldn't be made b/c the catch was made in the outfield is incorrect.

But the people arguing that because of where the catch was going to be made that it shouldn't have been called just don't get it.
once umpire Holbrook saw the SS raise his arm and get under the ball, he called infield fly.
but at some point that does not become a routine play by an infielder. And i think where the ball was hit made the call bullshite. So i cant say i agree with you.
If someone skies a ball to the warning track, and the SS is able to run under it, is that an infield fly?
Ive seen it called in the OF, but never that deep.

Not completely right. The ball only has to be easily caught by an infielder. The ball could be caught by an outfielder or not at all like tonight.

I think on a ball that high, you can consider it a routine infield play, but you can also not consider it just as easily, which makes it a weird play in general. I really do see both sides of this one. It's a difficult call.

Was betting $30 on a's to win the ship a terrible pick?

He was within his power/rights to make that judgment call. He was just indecisive and used what I feel to be poor judgment.
That call defeated the purpose of the rule so therefore it was a bad call.

any time an INF has to run that far back it's not routine. That's just my opinion.
It kind of defeats the purpose of the rule. He is too deep to even cause any funny trouble with a dropped ball for a double play.
shite you can even argue that had a fast runner been on 3rd, he could have tagged up and scored on that ball, esp with the SS going back to catch it. It was that deep

this is why it's not a good call. But I still see why it was made, and how the ump saw it

It was +600
30 to win 180

Not bad imo, I mean that's pretty low risk high reward. And it's the playoffs, anything can happen.

I don't even watch baseball tbh, they just seem to be on a hot streak with winning their division

Can an outfield umpire call an infield fly IMMEDIATELY. I say it is impossible for him to call it IMMEDIATELY. therefore, he should not call it

On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder
This is the crux of why it was a bad call. "ordinarily have been handled by an infielder" is technical jargon for "routine play". And the play was by no sane persons opinion a routine play. The infielder ran AT LEAST 60 feet into the outfield grass, converging with an outfielder. The ball is dropped relatively often on similar plays all the time in baseball.
And you can't make that call the moment before the ball comes down. You are supposed to make the call with plenty of time for the baserunners, fielders, and other umpires to recognize the call well before the ball comes down.
I know technically it doesn't matter how deep the ball is hit, but you have never seen and will never see again, the infield fly rule called on a ball as deep as that one.

It's supposed to be called almost immediately.
If it's ever made on a ball that deep again, I hope that field is covered in beer cans too. That was really one of the worst calls I can ever remember seeing in any sport.

There is absolutely no fricking excuse for the way those fans acted after that call. That would be pathetic on any day but that was Chipper's last time to walk between those foul lines as a player. That man should be a damn hero to every Atlanta fan in that stadium yet their childishness marred the exit of a legend. I love the braves but god I hate that fricking city.
