It'll go boom and kill deer.
Just make 100% sure that the gun fits the kid well. A gun that doesn't fit well will not be fun to shoot nor will it be easy to shoot accurately.

Consider the 44 magnum. Mild recoil, hard hit, big hole, cheaper ammo.
In an H&R it could serve as a primitive weapon later on.
In a lever action it would serve as a handy woods rifle, and levers are fun to shoot.

I'm more excited for when he needs a full sized rifle so he can get a hand me down and daddy can get a new gun!

.308 and shoot the remington managed recoil ammo
This & when he gets bigger he get the better ammo & have a good rifle forever.

That was my reason for suggesting a 700 with a youth stock. When he outgrows that stock, full length ones are a dime a dozen. He'll never outgrow the caliber.
I still hunt with the rifle I killed my first deer at 7 years old with.

.243
i still have mine from when i was 7 or 8 years old

the 770 is junk
Correct. If you're trying to stay cheap there are better options. The savage you posted would be better, as well as the marlin bolt action (X7 maybe???)

Am I the only one who was given a .270 and told to learn how to shoot it, cause that is what you are going to shoot. I was a taller kid, but I don't ever remember having trouble shooting it.

Now I'm looking at guns on there and probably will be all day now

I'd like to keep it rather cheap bc I plan on giving him my 270 in a few years
So I'd prefer notto spend more than 4-500 bucks for the whole package

My first 2 deer were killed with a twenty gauge and then igot my current 270
Never looked back but i was a little older than 8

I wasn't shooting a 30-06 at 6-7 years old.
That's why I got a .243
I got my 06 when I was 9-10

That's how it used to work.
I started with a 6.5x55 swede. Awesome arse deer caliber. Recoil is soft as hell and it's rolling out long skinny 140gr bullets at 2600 fps.

4-500 bucks
I'm assuming that means you need to buy a scope as well???
Those cheap rifles are plenty good enough. The only one I don't recommend is the rem 770.
You can get him a .270 right now with a youth stock and let him shoot managed recoil ammunition if he can't handle full power shite (although he probably can)

i found one for you, bout to email you.

Why can't it still work now?
Posted on 10/4/12 at 9:46 am to 34venture
It can. People just don't mind spending money on their kids anymore like they used to.

The only youth model gun I was ever given was a crossman pellet gun
