Is Goodell really to blame?

Don't the owners have absolute authority on labor disputes such as this one? Isn't Roger Goodell simply an ambassador to the owner's wishes?

he's paid $20 million a year to be the face of the NFL. He gets the blame

So the people actually at fault take no heat? Why should the owners cave? The media and fans are all pissed at Goodell, not them.

plenty of heat is getting directed at the owners for this. Goodell is still a part of the system that isn't getting this shite done.
Jerry Jones is a pussy
Goodell has more power over the owners than you think. They chose him for this job and he can pressure them

In financial terms, the NFL and the officials union are reportedly battling over about $3 million annually in pension commitments, a drop in the bucket for a $9 billion organization.
Goodell is always talking about the integrity of the game and protecting the shield. He should be able to get $3 million from the owners

This.
And the way that this has been handled is not good. They need the face of the NFL to have a press conference and admit fault. They need him to expedite the labor negotiations. They need him to stop acting like he is all powerful if he isn't all powerful.

As commissioner his job is to lead the owners, not be a represenative of them.

You dont know what his job is

Goodell is the face taking most of that heat though. So the owners don't have to yet. A re-focus of anger would put more pressure on the people who won't pay a little extra for quality officiating.
I'm not saying Goodell is blameless, but putting the majority of the focus on him is exactly what the owners want.

They can choose to remove him from the job too.
What pressure can he really put on the owners? If they don't want to pay the extra 3 million, they aren't going to do it. Goodell represents them, but it is up to the owners/management to make a deal or not.

This of course is why everyone is so mad. The League seems so hypocritical after all the off the field suspensions/fines, bounty-gate, and the much harsher fines/suspensions for illegal hits to allow such poor officiating. There's the health risk, and after last night people don't believe the legitimacy of some results.

i believe with a 2/3 vote. Then they would be on the line for $20 million+ a year for the next 6 years. He's protected

You're spot on. As long as the fans keep watching and going to games, buying merchandise and spending money at stadiums, what incentive do the owners have to give the officials more money? None. The owners have a nothing to see here attitude and are perfectly fine with everyone bitching, wrongly, at Goodell. They are still making bank and I honestly don't think they could care less about what is taking place on the field,

maybe so, but he ran his mouth about the ref situation then gives this shite:
quote:
“I didn’t see that ending last night, I cut it off about halftime,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. Asked if he got any calls telling him what happened, Jones said he didn’t. “No, I did not. I just read a little note in the paper that the Seahawks pulled it out,” Jones said.

No, he gets your blame because you are a saints fan.

What?
The NFL commissioner is technically an employee of the owners, but part of his duties are to police, oversee, and direct the owners.

I'm pretty sure he is getting a shite ton of blame

In the aftermath, all eyes have been on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. A Wisconsin state senator tweeted Goodell’s phone number. Fans are enraged and calling for his head (seriously). And sports pundits everywhere were urging Goodell to be decisive following the embarrassing call Monday night.
Washington Post

It's the owners who are locking out the refs and must sign off on a contract. And it is the owners who employ Goodell. But at some point, Goodell has to lead his bosses. That's the mark of a great commissioner, and make no mistake, Roger Goodell believes he is a great commissioner. A great commissioner doesn't stand around and let his league continue on as a laughingstock.
Yahoo Sports
and in case you missed espn last night, Gruden, Young, Dilfer, etc. were all bashing the man
I've talked to fans of the Cowboys, Redskins, Packers, Falcons, and Broncos who are all furious with him. It isn't a saints issue, its a league wide issue

You can direct/oversee your bosses?

If you are suggesting the commissioner of the NFL is simply a figurehead position, then you are extremely incorrect.
Obviously, the owners play a large role in things like labor disputes. However, Goodell is only valuable if he leads the owners down a prosperous, well chosen path. If I were an NFL owner, I would be seriously reconsidering whether Goodell is in over his head. The decisions he has made in the last 12 months alone have been horrible.
That fact that 90% of the talk about the NFL has been about things other than the game itself over the last 6 months (bountygate, concussion related news, referee labor dispute, replacement referee debacle) should scare the hell out of every NFL owner.

This is a labor dispute though. The owners are the ones employing the referees, and it is they who decide to pay the extra 3 million or not. Goodell has the power to be a regulator of activities such that you keep a level playing field for all organizations. He however doesn't get to decide what the owners are going to pay employees.
ETA: Roger can certainly try to push the owners to make a good decision and end this nonsense. He can't force them to do it however.

He does what the owners tell him to do, not the other way around.
