He also had terrible decision making when pressured...he got flustered easily. We shot ourselves in the feet with costly 3rd down non-conversions and penalties in games like MSU. It didn't cost us, but stats don't tell the story.

and his style of play has been more successful than the coaches who are pass happy.

To be fair, and obviously generally-speaking, I actually would much rather lose putting the game in the hands of our defense (our stronger unit) than putting the game in the hands of our offense (our weaker unit).

In other words, I would be really pissed if we tried something on offense that ended up losing us a game when we have a defense that wasn't going to give up anything and didn't even give them a chance to win us the ballgame.

You are right....this style sometimes does put a lot of pressure on the defense, but I guess my point is that given the strengths and weaknesses of the respective units, I would MUCH RATHER the pressure be on our defense than to have the pressure on our offense.

Critics of the offense are simply Miles Haters. They will find fault regardless of what the team does. The fact that Alabama and their "God" Saban as coach, more closely resemble the LSU team than any other CFB team. Stats are are so close it is funny. But we have offensive problems and Alabama does what it does best. Funniest shite ever.

i have been aroung a long time and i have never seen anything like it. of course, the internet hasn't always been around. there are some people that will always worship nick saban and it seems, resent miles being successful. they lay and wait and spring an ambush of vitriol when the team doesn't crush their opponent. saban gets a free pass for EVERY MISTAKE HE OR THE TIDE make. MILES GETS CRUCIFIED for perceived mistakes AND the anit-miles crowd NEVER FORGETS. i am not talking about most of the post game chatter after a game as a lot of drunk emotions come out but the haters stick with it, make it personal and make it clear that it's saban or nobody.

Cool stats OP! Were they at equivalent timepoints in the seasons or are those the averages from 2009,2010,and 2011 and the average of our incomplete 2012 season?

Do your statistics include only the first 4 games of each season?

I think the critics are upset that we are not dominating the four teams that have a combined 6 wins and 12 losses record.

That's where the problem is.

I guess that depends on your definition of dominating. Seems like the critics feel we should win every game 62-0.

I think North Texas, Washington and Idaho felt pretty dominated. Auburn easily played their best game of the year to date and we still out gained them 2 to 1.

I am by no means a Miles hater, but I can damn well be critical of what I saw on the field against a team that gave up 38 points to ULM. Excuses about mistakes are just that, LSU can not continue to run consistently when playing good teams with 8 or 9 in the box.

Without an explosive offense, which we will never have, we are doomed to lose three games this year in the regular season.

Agree with all of your post. I think the main problem is that what CLM is good at, is missed by most casual fans.

Bear Bryant is considered by most to be the greatest CFB coach ever. Vince Lombardi gets the same respect in the pro game. What were those guys known for? Clock management? Game management? Great offensive minds?

They were known for being some tough, ornery and mean damn men who built football teams that reflected their own personalities. They built some "damn strong" football teams. They were charismatic leaders of men who there players loved and respected and would run through fire for. This is what Les Miles is good at and its those qualities that has allowed him to win so many games and to make LSU the envy of every school not named Alabama.

The rantards don't understand football at this level. Football is a "hurt business" and to win consistently you have be more of a MAN than the other guy. CLM is a master at teaching this.

I don't disagree with your conclusion.

But, you are being intellectually dishonest by ignoring the competition so far while comparing to entire years.

Why try and stretch the truth when you have a very sound argument to begin with?

We have has 2-3 threads already about Mett's mustache. We cannot get past the mustache to see a QB, esp. after arguing about JJ/JL most of 2011.

(INSIDE JOKE WARNING - THIS IS FOR CHOCTAW)

Yeah, we were averaging almost 39 points per game (~38.5) before 1/9.

In all seriousness, we've griped for years that if we just got out of the 80s, total offense wise, and to an arbritrary level (I've even said "the 40s"), with our defense, we should be unbeatable.

Everybody else is adapting and nothing lasts forever. Our defense still looks smothering, but, thus far, have not appeared to have the big play ability of the last couple of years (particularly last year). Likewise, our special teams appear to have taken a step back - the OBJ 2 returns for touchdowns (*almost*) looked to be changing that. We're still kicking fairly well, but special teams does not appear to be the strength it was last year(some shanks, a missed FG and now fielding punts is an exercise so fraught with drama, it should be on AMC).

Having said all of that - a win is a win is a win. 4-0 is still 4-0. A win @ Auburn is still a win @ Auburn. This SAME b*tching was going on after Mississippi State last year and we rolled all the way to the big game.

The total offensive productivity improvement is DRASTIC - ~20%. Defense still looks smothering. Much of the complained about problems can be fixed - personal fouls, offensive penalties generally, execution problems in the passing game - none of these make it so that we don't have a servicable QB.

I'm excited about the stretch run to Atlanta.

here are the facts, playing three straight little sisters of the poor doesn’t prove much. The first real competition, proved the same ineptness that has plagued this offense for years. JJ and JL are perfect examples of blaming only the qb when things go wrong. bottom line, the jury’s still out on the offense, its scheme and preparation. While Mett is a huge upgrade, there are way too many things that have to be cleaned up, if LSU expects any success against the likes of Fla., S.C., A&M, and Alabama.
