Was he average when he crushed your Yellow Jackets 38-3 in Jordan Jefferson's second start at QB? He has 3 11-win seasons, 1 12-win season and 1 13-win season since 2005. Must suck to be average.

Kentucky was on the road and had a pretty solid team that year who played way over their heads in that game and Arky had DMC, one of the best college football players of the last 10 years and our D had been really fricked up by injuries at that point. You saw what they could do once they healed up in the BCSCG.

Talent is most important. You can coach all you want but you can't make them have talent.

Wasn't Jordan Jefferson damn close to becoming the winningest qb in LSU history? Would he say he's the best? Exactly, get real and quit hiding behind numbers

College and professional football is all about coaching. You won't believe how intricate the x's and o's of the game are

LSU is always ranked pretty high in recruiting... But not as consistently high as Texas, Florida, Bama and a few others. But it appears Miles and his staff are doing a fantastic job of developing that talent. Despite a horrible QB situation, LSU lost three games throughout 2010-2011. It's fair to say coaching is a big part of that.

Talent is always good enough to win some games. In rare cases, it's good enough to win a championship (Cam).

But Les Miles didn't beat Jim Tressel because of talent. Nick Saban didn't beat Les Miles because of talent. Urban Meyer didn't beat Bob Stoops because of talent.

Paul Hackett made Carson Palmer look like the biggest H.S. "sure thing" "total-bust" since Ron Powlus.

Pete Carroll and Norm Chow turned him into the Heisman Trophy winner in one off-season.

I would check again. LSU is probably at the top if you average the last five years.

do you think Saban beats Miles last year if Saban was coaching Florida? Talent matters, coaching matters, execution matters. To win big, you need all 3. Its easy for fans to say a team lost because of coaching, but really there are lots of factors.

I would say that he had a more talented team than Jim Tressel.

Talent level was even.

I would say Florida probably had a little more talent.

2002 was their 2nd year at USC. However, he still had talent, Norm Chow could not turn me into a Heisman winner.

This is ultimately the problem with this argument, everyone treats it as mutually exclusive. Les may not be the best coach, but he is better than avg. You don't win at as high a level as he has without talent AND good coaching.

Note how many NBA titles Michael Jordan and Shaq won before Phil Jackson became their HC.

using Rivals...

2012 LSU, No. 18
2011 LSU, No. 6
2010 LSU, No. 6
2009 LSU, No. 2
2008 LSU, No. 11

You may want to rethink your assessment...

Just glancing at it, Texas, Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida have more top 5 rankings and higher overall rankings. Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida State, Michigan and USC are right there with LSU.

No.

But it's such a fine line between bust and Heisman-caliber performance. Talent can fall both ways.

Bad coaching can take talent and make it mediocre or worse piss-poor...great coaching can bring you to that next level where you're winning awards and going on to the next level.

Who knows how good Ron Powlus could have been...but he chose Notre Dame which was still mid-transition from the option offense with Lou Holtz.

It really matters where you go and what type of coaching you get in life...talent does NOT rise to the top but itself. From high school, to college to even the Pros.

Good coaches + good players =/= good team. Its all about chemistry and how they fit.

You guys are giving coaches way to much credit. While yes they are important, but if a team has no talent they can't win, no matter who is coaching them.

Parcells
Belicheck
Johnson
Sabah
Lombardi
Landry
Stram
Ditka

All are examples of this.
