I said I get he was making a sacrifice for Alex, BUT it was sloppy writing. If he could force the Principal to quit his job, he could use the same blackmail info to keep him from messing with Alex.

We don't know how long he lived with Hugo. As I said, it seems to me, he would have spent years doing good deeds with Hugo to atone for Alex.
