Got a 2003 Dodge Durango 4.7L Engine that needs to be relaced/rebuilt. Found a place on Mammoth that will rebuild it for right about $4K. Anyone have any other suggestions on who will do a good job/decent cost? TIA

I'd go to a junkyard and do a transplant of at least an '06 or better 4.7 (if that's possible, may require new PCM/Wiring harness too). The newer 4.7s are much better...IIRC the '08 intake manifold is a much better design. The '08+ motors made near 300hp, maybe more, at the crank.

probly a stupid question and no offense intended, but couldnt you take the vehicle and 4k and trade it in on something better or of at least equal value? what's an 03 durango worth?

Not much at all.

OP, a 5.9 or newer 5.7 (hemi) swap wouldn't be a bad idea either...

i never said a word about that... i said to use what you had, and the 4k that you were gonna use for a new engine and trade for something that may be worth more than an 03 durango, 10-4?

I got ya, just don't want a cheap vehicle that will need more money poured into it soon after. With the people I've found so far it gets a 3 year 100k warranty on it.

Jordan, any idea what kind of cost I'd be looking at for the upgrade?

Call Tims engines in Denham springs and talk to Tim or Lane.

I knew I would find Jordan in here before I opened it.

He has a pager that goes off any time Dodge is posted anywhere.

I'm bringing pagers back in style.

To the OP: not sure on cost, but if you go search www.dakota-durango.com/forum you will find TONS of information on engine swaps, rebuilds, do's and don'ts. I know a few guys that have swapped Hemi's into their 4.7 Rams...and a couple that have swapped hemis into their old bodystyle Dakotas...pretty popular swaps. I don't see how it could be anymore of a headache than rebuilding a 4.7

Replace, don't rebuild.

You could probably get a good junkyard motor for cheap
