Got a Rossi rifle/shotgun (interchangeable barrels) for my son 12 years ago.

Rifle was a POS. Terrible group, lousy sights.

With the .410 shotgun barrel, it was quite nice. Liked the revolver-style transfer bar safety. We still use it as a shotgun.

Get the Rem. Model Seven if they still make it.

I got one of these 25 years ago (when I was 9) and slated many deer with it. I let 3 of my nephews use it through the years. Little Josey will be 7 in October and will start slinging lead with it this year. It has been a great little rifle.

ETA: if I had to buy a new one, I would strongly compare the .243 to the 7mm-08.
