Something that struck me on the HBO rewatch: After everything Jon did to get in with the Wildlings so he could warn the Nightwatch - killing Halfhand, risking his own life, etc., he almost throws it all away because he didn't want to kill that old man when they went south of the wall.

Kind of clashes with a lot of the gritty, realistic and dark tone of GoT and a lot of other modern historical fiction.

Killing Halfhand is different than the old man. Halfhand and Jon knew it was necessary and part of his 'job.' I got in the mood to reread the books today but I'm going to hold off until the season is over I think.
