i missed it. why do we expect these lost swords to make an appearance?
Posted on 4/26/13 at 12:46 pm to manwich
Pretty sure Illyrio has most of them stashed away in his shed out back.
Obviously Lightbringer needs to make an appearance.
Blackfyre, Dawn, and Dark Sister would be cool to see as well.
Don't give a frick about Brightroar

Besides possibly killing Others like obsidian.

I think of obsidian candles like I do the candle in Hocus Pocus. As long as it's lit, magic shite can go down.

I was just think the same thing. If Dragonstone was blockaded for awhile then probably no.

And I guess with a lot of time between now and the next novel I've got time to read them all again. The only one I don't have is the first one. Borrowed it from the library on my kindle and read it back in the spring.
So it has been a while...
But I'm finally starting my re-read of them all. Read the Prologue and the 1st chapter last night of Book 1. Borrowed it from the library again, so I'll try to knock it out in 3 weeks.

Chekhov's gun is a metaphor for a dramatic principle concerning simplicity and foreshadowing. It suggests that if one shows a loaded gun on stage in the first act of a play, it should be fired in a later act; otherwise, the gun should not be shown in the first place. The principle was articulated by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov and reported in various forms.
"Chekhov's gun" is often used as an example of foreshadowing, with the sight of the gun preparing the audience for its eventual use. But the primary point of Chekhov's advice was to caution against including unnecessary elements in a story or its staging. Failure to observe the rule of "Chekhov's gun" may be cited by critics when discussing plot holes. The deliberate defiance of this principle may take the form of a red herring: something which the audience is meant to assume will be important to the plot's outcome, but ultimately is not

Except for one.

the swords are symbol of the prestige of certain houses. in that sense, they have been used. especially Ice signifying the destruction and separation of the Starks.

yea all i could keep up with was Arianne. I guess she is on her way to Aegon. just dont know what the other 8 Sands are doing and if the naked septa connects in anyway

I was thinking more of the two Targaryen swords. If they're not going to turn up, why mention them?
I guess that goes for the Lannister sword as well.

It's safe to assume many of the swords on the throne are of Valyrian steel since there are reportedly hundreds in current circulation. However, many of the named swords mentioned missing went missing long after the Iron Throne was created.
Wait. The Iron Throne was created with the swords of the defeated during Aegon's Conquest. Since the armies of the 7 kingdoms were armed prior to Aegon's Landing, don't see how very few if any of them could be V Steel, but iron and castle forged steel at best...unless I missed something. Weren't most of the existing VS swords brought to Wesos by Aegon and his host? Given to the greater Houses as reward for fealty?
Ice being the exception, I thought?
At any rate, I was implying the hidden VS swords were placed into the throne after (long after) the throne was created. Disguised as just another iron sword- but not welded in place (although it may appear so- purposefully)
Same idea as hiding a body in an old coffin with the original carcass....who would look there?
Hundreds in circulation. But all the wealth of Casterly Rock was unable to procure even one, and Tywin was actively searching. I think they're extremely rare.
How did Mormont get one?

Ice, the Valyrian steel sword of house Stark was in Westeros long before Aegon conquered. One could reasonably conclude other noble houses had similar swords.
Yeah, hiding the priceless swords in plain sight unattached and loose in the iron throne makes perfect sense.

Yep. There was trade between the Free Cities of the East and Westeros long before Aegon showed up.
Any shot we can get the greatest thread there is, or ever will be to page 300 tonight?
