Did LSU get the best players in the state in those years and the talent just wasn't what it is now or did most of the best talent leave the state for other SEC schools etc.? Has Louisiana always had this level of talent and we just weren't getting it?

They went to the Michigans and Notre Dames.. Segregation in the south was something to get away from, so they went north.

Now days these kids are staying home and that's why you see the rise of the SEC since '90 or so

Eh, some of that did happen, but if you look back at the Advocate Super Dozens, Times Picayune Top 10's, etc. LSU got almost every one of them on those lists.......I was one of them.

Louisiana has always had its fair share of talented players, many of which played in the NFL. However, they weren't all from LSU. Not that they are now but the age we live in with all the info that is available via the internet and other media combined with the amount spent on recruiting budgets is a world of difference from those times. So it's a lot less likely that LSU misses out on recruiting a kid that is worthy of being a Tiger.

Says the Baton Rouge publication.. Of course they would consist of LSU prospects

First, the lists were posted BEFORE committments.
Second, I as well as most others on the list were well situated on Max Emfinger's and Tom Lemming's lists.

Fail on the hometown angle.......

This was in the 80's when Rivals, Scout, etc. did not exist.

80.. alabama got Bubby Brister.. LSU got timmy byrd.. then baseball got brister then tulane then ULM.. and USM got byrd...

late 70s LSU missed out on Fourcade.. yeah it was a big deal when it happened and Wilcox. and When Johnny Hector went to aTm it made the news statewide...

The reality of it back then - if you didn't follow HS football you had no clue who kids were...

I remember Risher was a parade all american out of salmen and plenty tiger fans had NO CLUE who that freshman #7 was back then....

heck.. a lot of people had no clue who dalton hilliard was till the season started..

LSU didn't scout or recruit N. La. as well in the 70's and early 80's as it did in later years. And, even after Mac left there were periods where LSU lost some great talent from N.O.
DiNardo was an improvement and began to turn things around.

Bubby Brister played with Tulane, not Alabama.
Joe Ferguson, John Booty were both All American and signed with Arkansas ( in part b/c of Mac and his run offense). We lsot some good palyers to the FSU's, Michigans, Okla. , Ala of the world

yes, Bubby Brister signed w/ Alabama. A big party in Monroe and the Bear was present for it. Then he went to play baseball profesionally, then Tulane(behind coachs' son, forget his name), then NLU were he set the world on fire for a year.

Joked w/ a buddy that the Bear must have been livid after heading to Monroe to watch ol' boy commit to Bama and then never show up on campus.

I didn't start following recruiting until the late 80's and early 90's but LSU lost bigtime players to FSU, Miami, and a few other random schools. Dinardo improved that some, but still lost out on some big time players. Warrick Dunn and Travis Minor to FSU come to mind.

Brister got screwed at Tulane because Jon English, Head Coach Wally English's son needed to play.
Back then, Bama was real selective in LA. Signed Steve Mott , from Shaw and my teammate, Tommy Wicox in 78. Coach Bryant spoke at our Banquet. Still trying to figure out what the hell he said...
OU used to get some kids from St Aug. Louis Oubre and Darell Songy had nice careers there. Johnny Hector was a big loss...
Coach Stovall and Pete Jenkins turned things around an NOLA, getting Clapp and Henriquez from Martin, Rehage from Bonnabel, Sancho from Shaw, Ralph Norwood from OP Walker,Robert Packnett from McDonough, Donald " Lucky" Polk from 35 ( our first African American Recruited as a QB. Carl Otis Trimble was Moved to QB) Waldon Cager from Aug, Mike Murla, Darren Malbrough and a couple others from Curtis...missed Louis Lipps from ESJ, Tyrone Vaughans and a few others...
