Dining suggestions in St. John, USVI

Can I make a recommendation?

St. John's is a great little island. But if you are looking to take a ferry ride, avoid St. Thomas which is the Biloxi of the Carribbean. Go instead to Tortola or Virgin Gorda and spend a day. I believe there is a ferry from St. John's to Jost van Dyke. Go there and spend a day at the Soggy Dollar Bar and/or Foxy's. Former preferred.

I've found conch fritters in the Caribbean to be hard to find. Down there you are more likely to find Caribbean lobsters than anything else. They are pretty good butterfiled, grilled, and basted in garlic butter. The BVIs are also secretly home to some of the best wings in the world.

Yeah, we definitely didn't want to stay there.

Any trip to the BVI hinges on my wife getting her Passport renewal in time.

St Thomas isnt that bad. We stayed at Secret Harbour which was very nice. Its just a PITA to get around. If you ferry that would put you in RedHook which has a couple of good places to eat. Secret Harbor Resort has a pretty good restaurant. Pesce is really good in redhook. Molly Molone's is a good place to get some drinks as is Duffy's.

In Cruz Bay that Texas place serves a pretty decent breakfast (sorry cant remember exact name but it is by the feryy terminal). Also there are a couple of places that do a great happy hour at Wharfside Village.

I've been to the British West Indies and the Caymans, but never the BVI or USVI. Can't wait.

Beautiful place.......no real need to venture off of the island. As for food, the Sugar Mill @ CB is excellent. We went into town one day for the obligatory shopping and a meal. None of the menu's at any of the places in town were overly impressive.......actually ate a "gringo pie" and drank $2 Sol off of basically a street vendor....was actually pretty good and the beer was ice cold.

Sugar Mill at night is an unbelievable setting.

Also...good luck with the weather this time of year.

Conch fritters are street food in the USVI. If you can't find a good one on St John take the puddlejump to St Croix and you will find it at the square by the fort.


PS you have to get a Calypso daiquiri or two while there. A chocolate malt that will kick your arse is what it is.

How many days are you there? Unless you are there for a full week and get bored there may be no need to leave the island. I have been to probably at least 70% of the islands in the carribean and I would like to have my ashes spread out over St John is the way I feel about that place.

Also some people like that place by the STT airport which your cab driver will push pretty hard on the way back. It wasnt anything special. Felt a bit sketchy too. I do think they had Conch though.

They dont have much hurricane activity due to being a bit south of where most occur. They do get a lot of rain but it comes and goes fast.

Now there was a 4.7 earthquake in the middle of the night when we were there that I didnt expect.

Only one of those islands I have not been to is St Vincent. Its easily nicer than Jamaica. St Lucia is nice to view the Pitons but St John has nicer beaches and a lot better diving/snorkling.

Mostly rain wise......they do get alot of rain at this time and it can be severe. When the tropical waves continually role off the coast of Africa, they get rains on a pretty consistent basis. As Cat mentioned however, they come and go rather quickly if not associated with a storm.

8 days is a perfect amount of time. Last trip we didn't venture off of the CB property much.....Scott beach is amazing......deer, wild donkeys on the beach, sea turtles, live starfish, snorkeling a few steps off of the beach etc.......i could go on and on. I think Catman and I have a similar feeling about the island.......(the most scenic and relaxing place i've ever been to).
