I have read some extremely uninformed
opinions on this thread. Having an extra set of eyes plus another proven LB coach will be a huge bonus. Thinking about the about all the attention LSU's young LBs will get from Chavis and Steele coaching them up. Steele is consider one of the best LB coaches in college football. As a teacher, I understand how much faster students learn in small groups. This is a huge plus. In addition, he can help point out some weaknesses that he found in other SEC offenses from his experience with coaching at Bama. He could also show us some keys for attacking Bama's defense being that he coached there. This is a great addition.

the staff is full, it's not like he will be a position coach or the DC.

yeah, I could see people up in arms had we made him our DB coach. But the whole "OMG his D had 70 points put up on it!!" thing is just stupid. A coach with his kind of experience as an intern? Pretty cool IMO and says a lot about the respect he has for Chavis.

No one in the coaching community considers Steele to be one of the best LB coaches in the country. Like I mentioned, he road the coattails of some of the best defensive mods in the game (Osbourne, Capers, Andrews, and Saban) and benefited from an embarrassment of riches at the position. His LB units at Clemson wouldn't have been able to play at Vanderbilt.
Trust me if you think Steele will be doing anything other than assisting in the categorizing of film breakdowns and holding a tackling bag you're kidding yourself.

Didn't LSU just sign a plethora of young LBs?

LINK
He was the LB coach for the Carolina Panthers for three years under Don Capers who is a highly regarded defensive guru. In addition was the DC/associate HC for Tricky Nicky. I think his resume speaks for itself. Its not like LSU is replacing Chavis with Steele. Its an extreme pair of boots on the ground. Experienced boots.

Did you not read the rest of my post? I mentioned all of those stops. I know plenty about Steele. I can tell you from a first-hand experience that he's an extremely charismatic, energetic guy who is a great recruiter. That's why he continues to get good jobs. He's simply not a good LB coach.
Again, there's no use in arguing this. It will have about as minimal an impact on LSU's upcoming season as humanly possible.

Exactly. I guess posters on here have never been in a football practice. A defensive coordinator is only as good a his position coaches can teach what the DC' scheme.

It's a common trait among defensive masterminds to hire incompetent position coaches who bring little to the table other than being a cheerleader. only shitty coordinators hire great position coaches.

This thread is proof that LSU fans will complain about anything and everything.
A coach with an outstanding resume has decided to come work at LSU FOR FREE as basically an extra helper (meaning no current LSU coach is being replaced by him). How are we ever going to get through this?!?!?

I actually watched 8:51 seconds of every passing play that UWV ran including the pitch passes they scored on (2) against Clemson.
(Before you ask, @smartfootball's Chris Brown wrote a 10,000 word breakdown on the history, development and schematics behind the Air-Raid Spread Offense. The cut-ups of the Orange Bowl were included as reference points in the blog post)
They played terrible angles & had horrible technique. They completely lost their composure and got shredded. Steele isn't going to be calling the plays or making real decisions.
He did interview for our DB job and is a close personal friend and confidant of Chavis. Anything that makes Chavis more comfortable and happy I'm all for.
Beyond that, Steele being around our program is outstanding as he's been all over the college game, as well as coordinated in the NFL for several years. Nevermind that the great Saban hired Kevin Steele (no wisecracks about him hiring Phil Elmassian, either!).
Another positive is that Kevin Steele was and has always been a dynamite recruiter. From his time at FSU to Bama & then at Clemson. Anytime he can be around players or recruits, its going to be a good thing.

You're making a great point that I agree with completely.
But even the great Saban hired a Phil Elmassian and/or Bobby Williams every now and again...

Yeah. It's a great pickup. I guess some posters think Chief is everywhere during practice. A Defensive Coordinator isn't at Linbackers drill and Dline drill at the same time. A DC is only as good as his position coaches. A position coach works on technique and drills that will help with the scheme that the DC wants. A coach with the resume that Steele has isn't coming to LSU to "JUST BREAK DOWN FILM AND KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT". He won't be making defensive calls on Saturdays but I'm sure Chief respects his opinion and knows the guy can coach. You don't make it on the staffs he's been on, by being a shitty coach.
LSU fans should be happy we have an experienced addition to our GREAT DEFENSIVE STAFF. Not gripe about the amount of input he'll have. He'll have the amount of input ,our GREAT DC, thinks he should have.

Bs. You don't make an nfl coaching staff as a linebackers coach by sucking at coaching linebackers.
