What could spool a reel without one crank...

Trout fishing with live shrimp under a cork? Happened today in the mouth of the gulf... Line took off and I couldn't even get one crank on him. Shimano symetre 2500 with 30# power pro. I've got 40" reds before, and this has never happened before. We didn't have time to lift the power pole and run with him. I'm thinking a shark. What says the OB?

As a kid, I ran up and down grand isle state parks beach fighting a fish. Turned out to be a jack. Hell of a fight.
