Coincidentally, our group NOLA Voice Talent is putting on just such a show shortly - a 1940's radio drama-style 'on-stage' production of "It's A Wonderful Life" in front of a live audience on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Deutsches Haus in Metairie.
I'll definitely check that out

Its a total knockoff of The Shadow but I like to listen to The Avenger when I'm driving for some popcorn crime fighting.
I'd listen to The Shadow more but too often the recordings I hear are sub par. The Avenger generally sounds pretty good though.
I know some will call the show borderline racist but IMO Amos and Andy is pretty damn funny. Perhaps I have simply listened to the wrong episodes but it seems like the characters are no more foolish than the ones in The Honeymooners.

The plots of A&A are little different from Sanford & Son

Youtube has a lot of old radio shows now. Including the radio version of Dragnet from the forties and fifties.

Mr King would you consider changing the title of this thread to something like "Old Time Radio"?
So it doesn't seem like it's only about one obscure show... Might actually get one person to click on it for that reason.

Listened to this today and it was great.
I've been listening to Murder at Midnight recently and it's pretty good. It's only 26 episodes and I love the use of the organ and the shows intro:
"Midnight, the witching hour when the night is darkest, our fears the strongest, and our strength at its lowest ebb. Midnight, when the graves gape open and death strikes."

OTR is great. I've let my little nephew listen to some of the Quiet Please episodes and he loves them.

I don't know how my name got into the title of this thread, but anyway...
"A Gray Flannel Hatful of Teenage Werewolves"
quote:
The Stan Freberg Show was a weekly radio comedy show that ran on the CBS Radio Network for only fifteen episodes in 1957 from July 14 through October 20.
Despite its short run, the show managed to develop some running gags and stock jokes, from Freberg's ambivalence toward Madison Avenue (faux advertisements for "Puffed Grass" and "Food", as well as the classic sketch "Gray Flannel Hatful of Teenage Werewolves") to the overwhelmingly popular interviews with a sneaker-wearing Abominable Snowman.
It was the last American network radio show to devote itself purely to comedy.

I put your name in there because you're dropping all the knowledge. Can't tell you how many times I've checked this thread for stuff to listen to.

That's a pretty cool story
I've been listening to some OTR to get into the Halloween mood.
Suspense - "On a Country Road" with Cary Grant
Suspense - Ghost Hunt
Escape - "Three Skeleton Key" with Vincent Price
The Inner Sanctum - "The Wailing Wall" with Boris Karloff

The Great Radio Comedians (PBS Documentary, 1972)
quote:
Excellent, one of a kind PBS documentary on the history of radio comedy. This was produced in 1972, early enough that many of the greats were still alive and well. Included in long interview segments are George Burns, Jack Benny and Edgar Bergen, as well as members of Fred Allen's radio cast.
