Great season. I'd rank the seasons 2,4,5,3,1.

show sucks

Could be worse and be that terrible arse Caged show on MTV.

To the OP, Season 5 was great. Thought it was up there in comparison to other seasons.

Good season.

I'd rank it second to last though.

1, 3, 4, 5, 2.

Two classic episodes that can fight for all time best status.

The Wheel, Nixon vs. Kennedy, Meditations in an Emergency (I'm not perfect Pete), The Suitcase, The Beautiful Girls, Signal 30 and The Phantom to name a few.

I try to rank the seasons, but I can't get comfortable putting anything at the bottom. But here goes:

5,2,4,1,3.

4 would be last but for The Suitcase.

It has Don's visit to Peggy in the nuthouse, Joy (by far the sweeteast piece of trim Don tore off). "I'm not perfect" and Duck getting his balls chewed off by Don.

I felt that the first half of S5 was the weakest stretch of the series, but the 2nd half may have been the best, maybe right behind the 2nd half of S3.

The first 3 eps or so of S5 was the best run of the series. Harry Cran didn't make those episodes, but the dropoff coincided with his de-emphasis. You had the fight in the middle, but it didn't get awesome again until Don put his trousers back on.

Vague/very minor spoilers:

I don't remember much interesting happening until the Pete driving school episode, which was great. The first episode was OK, the road trip with Megan sucked, the episode with Don being sick was terrible as well, IMO. Pretty sure those were the first 3 of S5.

Harry getting stoned and hitting on those girls at the Rolling Stones concert.

Spoilers:

S5 was great. Almost no Betty...

Signal 30 was one of the best episodes in the series. Roger tripping/Don's road trip/ Peggy's theater DHJ episode was great. The Codfish Ball was awesome. I believe those were back to back to back.

I liked the Joan prostitution turn and thought it worked, though lots didn't buy it. Rory's arc was silly. And the finale wasn't great until the closing montage.

After having some time to process the entire season I think it was a pretty weak effort compared to other seasons. It felt really disjointed and there were some story lines that really flopped (see: Pete and Beth Dawes). It definitely had some great scenes and interesting plot and character development, but it was missing a cohesive direction that is the hallmark of all the other seasons.

"He had gum stuck on his pubis"

"He didn't ask you because he thinks you are a homo."

"I shall warn you that when I raise my fists it shall be too late to run."

"You want to take out your teeth or should I knock them out?"

All leading up to:

(When I read those quotes, I hear Pete/Lane's voice in my head.)

Definitely one of the better seasons. It started out really strong and pretty much kept it up the whole time. So many awesome storylines running through it. I did feel like the finale was a bit of a letdown, though.

OP asked how season 5 stacks up to other seasons, not to have the best parts spoiled...
