Water surface temps were in the low 40's. The fish were, believe it or not, out on the flats in about 6 feet of water. They seemed to just be scattered everywhere with no real rhyme or reason. I started out fishing trees in a much deeper creek. I only caught three keepers there in over two hours of fishing even though the bait was stacked in there so thick it covered half the depth on my fish finder. After I moved out to the flats, the fishing picked up, even though there was a lot less shad.

I had a similar success story not long ago in a nearby lake. If I had not seen people catching, I would have never fished that shallow.
