The poles are on a shallow shelf. But it drops off in some places to 8+ feet in the main channel not 10 to 15 feet from the poles themselves

So I just got the new two blade drive on my Jackson Coosa FD and I was cruising at 4 mph and wide open I was running at 4.5. Going in reverse was instant backing up and going out the hole was much better. All in all very impressed

I have been seeing online people were happier with the two blade than the threes. Glad to hear its coming around

I watched a Headwaters Kayak video yesterday where the drive broke. Is that the same one they tore apart?

I think the new drive is slightly different. They installed different bearings in the new ones creating less stress on the lower unit. I noticed a huge difference in less peddling and decent speed.

It was a new one that broke. They were comparing a Cruise FD, Manta Ray Pedal, and an Outback.

I really would like to try out an FD again if they really did update the drive. I absolutely hated the Cruise FD I rented when they first came out.

Any of y’all have experience with younger boys (8-12 years old) paddling their own yak?

I have a native 14.5 tandem that I want to let my boys use with me while I paddle/pedal in a single-seater on saltwater fishing trips.

I can help them get launched and stay near them, but I’m just wondering if some situations I’m not thinking of would make it a bad idea before one of them is at least 14 or so.

I've still yet to try a prop driven yak. I especially want to try the Old Town.

Anyone fishing tomorrow? Think I’m gonna head to Leeville in the morning.

Just start them off in an area thats protected marsh and won’t have them trying to paddle against a tough current.

Marsh between Hwy 1 and backside of Elmers Island or behind the school in Port Sulphur are 2 spots that I know of that would be easy for a kid to start out, especially until you get an idea of their skill level

ETA: i would avoid PAC or Leeville until you know how well they paddle because the current can move pretty quick through the canals right by the launches there

This is 100% true. I see people recommend PAC all the time to newcomers and unless you’re launching off Island Rd I would never suggest that to someone new to this. That current can become a pain in the arse pretty quickly.

I'll be down there as well for my first time. It looks like the conditions will be perfect

I love it as far as kayak type craft go. But I have some serious boat fever. My son is now 6 and I’m ready to start bringing him and the wife fishing.

It doesn’t do bad in the wind. The only thing I don’t like is crossing large bodies of water when it’s choppy. Being so high up i bounce around like a buoy and get seasick.

My PA 12 isn't as good in the wind as my Outback. Probably a combination of hull shape and sitting up high. But I do enjoy fishing out of it more. I especially love the dual steering being I'm a lefty and the rod never leaves my left hand.
