My favorite bet is this: The rolling bet.

CFB: Choose a game on Thursday, Friday, AM Sat, Mid-day Sat and Even Sat.

Bet $110 on Thursday CFB game.
Win $110 bet on Thursday, bet $220 on Friday.
Win $220 bet on Friday, bet $440 on AM Sat game.
Win $440 bet on AM Sat game, bet $880 on Mid-day Sat game.
Win $880 bet on Mid-day Sat game, bet $1600 on PM Sat.
Win $3200 on PM Sat game. Party.

So you have two optons:
1. you lost 110
2. you made a bundle.

But, let's be honest, option #1 is probably going to happen about 97 times out of 100.

How many times have you actually won on this rolling bet of yours?

This is essentially just a 5-game parlay. It's different in theory, but, practically speaking, it isn't much different than a 5 game parlay.

"Would you hedge this bet"

No way. Why even bet the 600 in the first place if you are going to hedge it back down. Ride it out, go for the bigger win.

The only reason I put the 5 bucks on LSU that year was because a coworker of mine happened to be an LSU grad and tipped me that they might be pretty good. Once it got to the final four, the hedging was just a business decision.

Yea I'm a fan which is what ultimately led me not to hedge. That was my first future I ever bet. I bet on them again this past year and lost 20.

A 5 game parlay would have a higher payout so doing it his way is pretty dumb.

Actually, depending on how far you go, you are losing more than 110.

1. 110 Bet to win 100 = 210
2. 210 +10 Bet to win 200 = 420
3. 420 +20 Bet to win 400 = 840
4. 840 +40 Bet to win 800 = 1680
5. 1680 +80 Bet to win 1600 = 3360

So it you get to the 5th bet and lose, you lose 110+10+20+40+80 = 260

Someone can check my math on that as it has been a LONG day at the office, but you would be MUCH better off just doing a parlay unless you were really uncertain about the lines moving or you would "cash out" along the way.

Twice.

I only do it when I like 5 games heading into the weekend on that spread.

5 team parlays payout 20/1 or ~25/1 (offshore). So an initial $100 bet on a 5-teamer nets you $2K to $2.5K

Starting with $100 and betting all the winnings on 5 consecutive games wins you $3000+.

Win #1: $200
Win #2: $400
Win #3: $800
Win #4: $1600
Win #5: $3200

Actually the 5-game parlay would pay out a bit less than the way he is doing it.

EDIT: just saw somebody mentioned this already

+110 - 220 == -110
+330 - 440 == -110
+770 - 880 == -110
+1650 - 1600 == +50

If he had stuck with the same progression the last one wouuld hav been 1760 and all of them would have come out to -110

EDIT: I didn't realize that he was including juice in his numbers and so he is winning 100, 200, 400, 800 on wins...and not 110, 220, 440, 880. I'm not doing the numbers again.

Parlays pay out less than true odds.

If you just rolled up your bet on a 5 game parlay it's 2^5 power 2*2*2*2*2 = 32-1 odds.

A 5 game parlay will pay you 20-25 range depending on who you use.

That's why it's generally accepted that parlays are sucker's bets, because the only reason you'd use a parlay was if you felt there was a correlation between multiple games being played at the exact same time.
