I shoot a .270, but the calibers are very close.
One thing about the 30-06 is the variety of bullet weights you can get..55gr all the way to 180gr...if I an not mistaken.

Same can be said for the 270. With the combo of the 6.8spc and the 270 wsm, bullet selection is a lot better then it used to be. Of course, you have to handload to use them. I would spend more time choosing a rifle (make) then choosing between those two calibers, but given the choice with all else being equal, I would 270 win all day.

split the difference and get the 7mm-06(280 Rem.)

Like the 280. Not real easy to find ammo.

Both are really good calibers for this part of the country. The alt 6 was considered the best caliber ever made a few years back by some cohorts.
I have several of each.

You wont be disappointed with either for what you intend to do with it. I have a .270 that I dont hunt with much anymore. Only because where I hunt 75yds is the longest shot. I have a Marlin .444 that I take with me now.

30-06 as a matter of personal preference.
thats what i shoot, ammo is a touch cheaper for the 06

30 06 all the way.
Much larger variety of ammo. Can buy .55gr to 220gr factory load bullets. I have blown a part some hogs with a 220 grain bullet.
30 06 is more powerful and shoots the bigger bullets better.
270 shoots flatter and is slightly better at longer distances.
270 shoots a 140 grain bullet better than the 30 06 shoots the 150 grain bullet.
30 06 shoots a 180 grain bullet better than the 270 shoots 150 grain bullet.
In my opinion if you want distance go with the 7mm not the 270.

Why does everyone keep saying 7mm? Alone, this only refers to a bullet...
