What ever you want to call them. After seeing an OB thread link to these plans my brother and I decided to build one for my parents. Framing was built with 2x2s and 1x4s. All the covering was old cypress wood from some old shed/barns that's about 80 years old. Surprisingly it was in alot better shape than I expected. It's not perfect but I'm happy with how it came out. I also added wheels to this one so they'll just be able to roll it to the edge of the patio to drain. I'll probably start on another one in the next few days with a few revisions.

I've already been hit up a bunch from people wanting to buy one. I'm not sure. I'd be willing to sell a few if the price is worth my time I suppose.

It really wasn't that bad at all. I haven't done any form of woodworking since I finished high school about 8 years ago. As long as you have the proper tools and a little common sense it's pretty easy.

On another note if someone was interested in buying, what would you deem as a far price? I've had several people ask to name a price but I'd have no idea where to start and I don't really want to scare them off. They're built with a 94 quart Igloo Marine chest, not knowing shite about wood working I gather old cypress is worth a pretty penny, and build time is about 5-6 hours or so. Thoughts?

I think I'm going to try and build one. We have all the tools I would need, between me and my Dad but would just need to find some old fence boards or old cypress. I enjoy building stuff, just suck pretty bad at it.

Go to Goodwood Hardware or a store like that and price them there. Then add a premium for the old cypress.

I think my dad sells them for $300, if memory serves me correct. He built one for a benefit we did for prostate cancer last year and we auctioned it off and it went for $1,200.

It's really not bad at all. I have a few changes I plan to make in the design for my next one. I should have it done in about a week or so hopefully.

I found a company online that builds them and for one about this size is $335. Except they just use new cedar and a lesser quality ice chest. I feel like $400-500 would be fair...then again it's worth what someone will pay.

$400 is probably fair. You'd sell more at $300-350 obviously. 4 is a lot of scratch for an ice chest and people are always bitching about the cost of the yeti's.

I just wish I had the wood...I'd like to try and build my own

Throw it out in the rain/sun for a while maybe. I guess the stuff I used to be 80 years old or so based on what my powpow told me several years back, that these barns/sheds were already built when he was a kid. When I first started I expected the wood to just crumble and fall apart. It was actually very solid. My drill struggled a bit when I was drilling out a big whole for the drain.

That's about what I figured. I'll build a second one, if I sell it I'll build myself another. It's not like I'll be terribly upset if I get stuck with it.
