Not sure how this would be a shock if you've been listening to them? She definitely sounds like a woman singing?
Alabama Shakes aren't really my thing (outside a couple uptempo songs I've heard them sing like Heavy Chevy which I enjoy the hell out of), but she is a hell of a singer.

Not sure you how you did not know that was a woman...
I enjoyed them for a bit last fall, but get easily bored with the retro soul sound... That said, I've never listened to their new record, just the older ep

When I saw them take the stage at sxsw (hadn't listened to them prior), I thought the lead singer looked like a man from a distance. Then she started singing and I had a WTF moment.

I had no idea it was a woman until I turned on the Hangout festival live stream. I had been listening to them for months and didn't know. Some guys have voices that could pass for a woman or a man. Hell I listened to the Heartless Bastards for a year before I realized their singer was a woman, and her voice is even more obvious.

They are awesome.
SHe does have a deep female voice, but the songs mention her being a "daughter" and stuff like that.
