I've mentioned this elsewhere this morning, but re: LSU QB's in 2013...

Rettig & AJ both run version of 4 Verticals on offense. Shotgun base with wide (1+ yards) splits out of their OL.
The reads are different from their structure to ours, and of course you're going from under Center more in college-but that would've been regardless.
Rettig's O at Cathedral runs a ton more Shallow Crosses, which is what tips you off that his coaching staff is running a true version of the Mike Leach Air-Raid. Leach's use of the shallow cross concepts with 4 verticals comes from he & Mumme's appreciation for Lavell Edwards use of the routes in the BYU offense that they borrowed from to develop the Mumme varietal of Air-Raid.
Rettig keeps his eyes downfield, uses his feet to buy time and avoid pressure, throws well on the run and has excellent arm strength.
His OL blocks very well for him also.
AJ runs a more All-Verticals or 4-Verticals offense without as much short throws. They will throw intermediate routes on crossing patterns but mostly they're pushing the ball aggressively down the field.
Jennings film is more impressive simply because there's more of it. He moves very well for a kid with torn cartliage in his Junior tape. His release is quick and effortless. In a spread system that throws vertically, that tells me this kid is repping and practicing like crazy, and as someone else said he's either a natural, or extremely receptive to coaching on mechanics.
He gets the ball out quick and throws with touch. The ESPN tape shows some great velocity that some other folks actually questioned a bit but I'm sold he can chunk the deep out with Moffetization. Easily.
His mechanics don't break down on the run, and he's impressive on the HS tape of his Junior year because he plays behind a less impressive OL. He gives his receivers time and hangs tough in the pocket.
What I take from this overall is that the recruits we are after at QB are similar in ability, in the offensive background they're immersed in, and are nowhere near projects. They've all had a ton of fundamental work with mechanics of throwing it as well as footwork. They've had tons of experience in offenses heavily predicated on throwing it.
Extremely impressed with the class and completely sold on our future at the position. These two kids-provided they make it to campus-will push each other and respond beautifully under Krags. One of them will start and they have the potential to be a quality QB in this league for multiple seasons.

I enjoyed reading that - thanks.

I agree with everything but this, because philosophically I think almost EVERY HS QB recruit is a project. Nearly none of the are ready to step in and play immediately.
That being said, both QBs keep their eyes down field, but I think I like Jennings a smidge more.
Both these guys are legit QB prospects. Very, very good players.

The more I read about the QBs we're recruiting, the more I realize how good of a QB coach Krags is. He turned Lee around on fairly short notice, and can also recruit well, as evidenced by both our QB commits this year as well as the near signing of Gunner Kiel.

I really love that we added AJ to the fold, especially for this class. A lot of people feel like we should've shut it down after getting Rettig, but competition at that position will make those guys better and whoever wins the job will almost certainly leave early because both guys have NFL ability. So both will get their chance to run the show. I was a little concerned by the fact that Rettig threw 20 picks versus only 17 tds in 2010. That's a lot of picks for a guy with that kind of ability even if he was just a soph. AJ threw only 4 ints versus 19 tds last year, while Hayden threw three picks in 6 quarters before hurting his knee. I have no doubt that he will value the ball more at LSU, but my mind's a little more at ease knowing that he'll have competition from a guy with similar ability. Some guys need that in order to reach their full potential.

GFunk: I like your assessment and breakdown. I normally have some reservations about HS QB's who take all their snaps in 4 and 5 wideout sets from the shotgun, but Jennings is an exception. I think his release is great, his arm is strong, and he just seems to look like he will be a good learner. Plus, his quotes make him sound like a mature and articulate leader who is team focused. All good by me.

And He's probably not going anywhere. Imagin how good the QBing will be if Krag stays here 5 or 6 years.

I hope you post another analysis like this one once you've had some senior film to study.
Good work.
Good work.

Interesting thats what your analysis is from Rettig's film. I remember his hs coach saying that they run the "Air-Raid Spread" because the o-line wasn't that good. Not trying to trash your analysis at all.. Maybe the coach was just using the o-line excuse for the reason he runs that O.

Krags doin work. I think his evaluation of our QB prospects is key.

Don't worry...Les will have them running the option to the short side in no time.
Seriously, both guys are passers...not throwers. Quick release, good arm strength, accuracy, and touch. Moreover, they keep their eyes scanning downfield, looking to make a throw rather than run when they move out of the pocket. Even better, these guys can make nice throws while on the run and hit their receivers in stride. I really like both of them. Jennings made some fantastic throws to the sidelines. Another thing to keep in mind: Jennings committed after Rettig. He ain't skeered.

After seeing incompetence at QB the last few years, it's a breath of fresh air to see LSU land some top QB talent. Our future at QB is looking pretty bright

I love both of these QBs, they both have impressive film. Although i think im more excited about Jennings at this point, he makes some really good throws under pressure. It seems like his line isnt good at all. If yall had to pick one right now, which would it be?

Solid analysis.
Krags is the anti-crowton. QBs will develop. Krags has been working with crowton's mess. His guys will show a tremendous change in LSU QB play. Get ready for a new offensive image once his guys get going.
