Gonna get about 5 dozen this evening. If i pack the on ice and pull the plug will they stay good to tomorrow evening. I will keep ice on them the whole time. TIA

Yes. Wash them first, then put a damp towel or burlap or something over them and cover with ice.

ice on bottom, newspaper or burlap sack on top of that, then crabs on top of that. keep plug open.

Whats better ice on top or bottom

I like it on top. That way it drips down on the crabs and keeps them damp. A lot of people use newspaper, but it always tears up for me.

never tried ice on top...

I've never cooked crabs, are you trying to keep them alive?

On top seems the way I'm gonna go. I know they will die but they will stay fresh.

I like em dormant (don't throw claws) not dead when I boil.

Most will stay alive. I've kept them for a couple of days like this. Hell, there's no telling how old the crabs they serve in MD are after we catch them here and ship them all the way there.

They'll be very slow moving while chilled. I like to pull off the shells and leave pinchers. Saves a lot of space and easier to eat after boiled.

You are going to want them alive. A dead crab boiled is a mushy crab. Crabs are like crawfish and their meat breaks down quickly after they die.
And don't keep them too cold or they will also die. Most crabs are kept in refrigerated coolers with no ice on them. If you go to a crab buyer they will have them in a wooden box/crate with burlap over the top in a cooler and the people that deliver them to the markets usually do them in wax boxes with no ice. The best temperature for a crab is 45-50 degrees. Anything under 40 degrees and they die easier.

If i get about 2-5gallon buckets I can fit that in my outdoor fridge. Will they stay good till tomorrow around 4pm. Won't be getting till 7:30 this evening.

All of the crabbers I know transport them with a wet burlap sack over them. They would sometimes put a bag of ice over the burlap if they had to go far and it was 100+ degrees outside
