I assume them being jacked up is going to shorten the life of the motor, transmission, and rear end. Do these things regularly get 200K+ from the engines if not abused to hell?
I intend on crawling under whatever Jeep I purchase to check for rust and gashes from off roading. My main concern is reliability to start. I intend on it being my DD. Should i stay with stock for that purpose? I think a stock TJ would get me to most places I would go. A 2~4 inch lift with maybe 31 inch tires would be plenty for me. Would that effect the driveline much if kept within reason?

I do think I am going to keep away from the 4 bangers. I dont trust an engine long term if you have to keep your damn foot in it to go.

Bookmarked to re-read later, but for now my Jeep...
2006 tan TJ. Hard top with the doors off right now. Relocated sideview mirror brackets. 2.5" Skyjacker lift. 33" BFGoodrich MudTerrain tires on stock rims. Custom bumper (with a bent bar due to stupidity). KC Hilites on my windshield frame.

Just put on Mickey Thompson rims with Cooper Discoverer STTs.

Depends..... If the driver took care of it or not really. I am not a mechanical wiz by any means but I am sure the extra weight of bigger tires puts extra strain on the tranny more than the engine. Make sure you get a tj with at least a Dana 44.
If its going to be a daily driver then make sure to regear your axles.
With all of that said my TJ was low mileage but long armed, 35" tires, etc, etc and it was not the engine or tranny that broke. It was all of the little things that cannot stand up to the trail stuff wearing out over time.

Always start with the ground level. Find out what axles are under the jeep and what it is geared with. Axle mods are by far the most expensive mods. Especially if you can't regear at swap axles yourself. Try to find a TJ with a Dana 44 on the back and a Dana 30 up front. Those will be geared to 3.72 and can easily power up to a 33 inch tire with no engine mods.
Also, avoid body lifts like the plague. Suspension lift or nothing.

I have seen muddes with them for tire spin. It is uncommon to see them here in crawling country. Too much power. You are much better off gearing down.

Red finances may not let me be picky about axles. 6 cylinders and AC are my top priorities. 5 speed and axles are second. Mileage and looks factor in some too. I figure the most ill wind up with after selling and paying off my truck is $6500. That will be getting top dollar. Im really wanting to swing $1000 or so on a beater truck as backup as well. Hell I may wind up with a 4 banger YJ with an automatic but im getting a damn jeep

Now that is a sweet rig. I will be there on my next set of mods. I'll need to take my Jeep off the highway and get another daily driver for that stage.
