I'm looking for a decent but inexpensive system. I don't need retarded good. Would love to have for keeping up with kids in the yard and monitoring house while away. The ones I have seen so far mostly have mediocre reviews at best. Any insight appreciated. TIA

What do you consider inexpensive? Many companies will demo the equipment for you. So you can compare systems.

The $500ish range for a pretty decent system.

Did a lot of reading and searching and this was the best for the money.
Comes with 4 cams of decent quality. Can be expanded to 8. The value is in the DVR. Its a QT528 which if you search you will see is more than the whole package costco has.
I may have misunderstood but mine is for home security.

If you want cheap and easy you can simply use game cameras however you won't be able to check them in real time without going with a paid service.
[Just saw your post on the $500 limit so this solution may not work.]
If you want something you can use at home and record video/images/voice Axis is a very good brand to go with. Price can be expensive depending on what you need though.
LINK /
To access the Axis camera feed(s) you would need to be able to connect to your home computer which isn't very hard to setup. (so you could see a real time feed while away)
I would call the sales line and talk to someone if you are interested they can direct you to the products/solution that would benefit you the most.
I don't have any experience with the cheaper home solutions so i can't suggest anything there.
good luck.

I looked at newegg at some but the reviews were either the next best thing or the biggest hunk of shite. Seemed like it isn't worth the risk.
How do you like yours so far?

Awesome. Have streaming to my iPhone, and the kids iPods. The best part is the iPad which i leave plugged in at night next to the bed. Im sure there is a better way but for now i just throw a t shirt over it so the room isn't so bright.
Lot of f250 thefts in metairie lately.
Can also view from windows or mac.
Live stream is a little jumpy but playback is smooth. Still reding on how to tweak the settings. DVR can be completely controlled from the net. Apps are functional.

Home security is what I want with the ability to watch the kids while they are playing outside

Well I've done my homework and from what i can tell the value is in the DVR not the cameras in these package deals. So i went for a package that had the best DVR.
Costco has a QSEE 16 camera system but the DVR is not as good. You need to pay attention to the record and playback rate. I think D1 is the best.
On the cameras, if you add any, go with verifocal 700 tvl for the specs.

The DVR is what I wanted to be good. I don't mind spending more money later for good cameras. Wanted a basic system soon though. Just don't want to buy a POS that I'll completely replace eventually.

Well i have only had it a week but so far so good. Couple of items of note if you go the way i did.
The dvr doesn't come with a monitor though you can hook it up to a tv. You will need something for setup.
You may need to get extensions for the camera wire but they are available on amazon

Thanks. I was prepared for the no monitor part. I have an old one just sitting that should still work, if not Ill worry about that later, I imagine Ill use my lap top or phone to view it mostly anyway. You mean extensions for camera to reach DVR? If so I think I may only need 1, maybe 2

Yes the kit comes with 60ft video wire and power cords together . QSEE 100 foot extensions can be found on amazon.
Go to the qsee website to get the part number.
Also, i should point out that in some reviews i read the dvr fan was considered to be loud. It is compared to other pc fans but its not ridiculous.

I installed a Lorex wireless system recently, haven't read all the info but it works well. Comes with a 9" monitor which is very clear.

Logitech Alert is what I run.

not gonna be happy at that price. A good 4 channel dvr cost about $500 then you have about $100-150 for decent cameras and another $350 for install.
